Dehydrated Banana Chips

How often do you see that joke on Facebook? The one when someone mentions that one week, they buy bananas, and they are gone in a day and another week they still have them all a week later.

Our family can be like that.

We will buy the fruit for the week and the kids will snack on all the fruit one week and then the other week they have no interest.

Add to this that we live in Portugal and fruit has a much shorter life span thanks to how hot the kitchen gets and I need to find good ways to use up the leftover bananas.

I have a few go to leftover banana recipes such as our blender nice cream and our air fryer banana bread, but it always feels like they do not fit into everyday snacking. But making a batch of air fryer banana chips does.

That is because they last much longer, i.e., perfect for our summer heat and they can go into the pantry for later.

They can also be a snack for school, road trips and even picnics at the beach.

Can You Dehydrate Bananas?

Yes, you can. Bananas are one of the easiest fruits for dehydrating and require very little effort. I probably make more of an effort when I am making a banana smoothie, compared to the effort that goes into this air fryer banana chips recipe.

Plus, it is much cheaper than buying banana chips from the shop and you can take pride in using your banana leftovers to make banana chips rather than creating food waste.

Can You Air Fry Banana Chips?

Yes, you can. I often refer to them as my air fryer oven banana chips because the brand of air fryer oven I have has a dehydrate setting.

It’s the Power Air Fryer Oven and it makes amazing air fryer banana chips and is the same banana chips recipe I am sharing with you today.

But if you don’t have the Power Air Fryer Oven, note that any air fryer with a dehydrate function or an air fryer that will go as low as 55c/130f is perfect for air fried banana chips.

Are Homemade Banana Chips Healthy?

Yes, they are. The ingredients in banana chips are healthy ingredients and is much better for you than regular potato chips, or as us Brits call them “crisps”.

You can also add in favourite seasonings to your air fryer dehydrated bananas.

Ingredients For Dehydrating Bananas In Air Fryer

Air Fryer Oven – I recommend this air fryer oven for dehydrating fruit, and it is fantastic because there are three shelves, and you can do a small batch or a large batch of dehydrated bananas.

Storage – You need a plan of action of where you plan to keep your dried fruit. You can keep it simple by eating them all straight away (yes I do that), use a zip loc bag (I prefer this one) or you can opt for traditional pantry containers (like this one).

Bananas – I prefer to use soft bananas as they have a quicker cook time and its also a great use of your banana leftovers, but you can use just bought bananas too.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil – I recommend that you spray your banana chips with extra virgin olive oil prior to adding your stevia. This helps the stevia stick to the fruit but also prevents them from going hard when they are dried. As there is nothing worse than hard as nails banana chips.

Stevia – I love my dehydrated bananas with stevia. It gives a wonderful sweet flavour to the banana slices as they dry. You just give the banana slices a sprinkle with stevia as you place them in the air fryer.

That is, it! You probably think that are complicated ingredients and accessories to make air fried banana chips, but there isn’t. It is also a fantastic easy recipe for air fryer beginners.

How To Prepare Bananas For Dehydrating?

Take a look at this picture of dehydrated banana chips:

If you saw a dehydrated banana chips recipe that looked like that I am sure you would run a mile.

Then take a look at this picture below:

The difference between the two air fryer banana chip recipes, is that one was tossed in lemon juice prior to air frying and the other wasn’t.

Its important that you have a bowl of lemon juice like this and add each banana slice prior to dehydrating, otherwise your banana chips will look awful.

  • Prep. Slice your bananas into similar size chunks. We recommend a professional slicer (like this one) for this and other dehydrated fruit as it can give an even cut.
  • Lemon. To prevent your bananas from browning, toss each of your banana slices in a bowl of lemon juice and place onto the air fryer shelves.
  • Add. Once the banana slices are spread out, add extra virgin olive oil spray, sprinkle with stevia prior to air frying.
  • Air fry. Load your shelf (or shelves) of bananas into the air fryer oven and air fry for 3 hours on 55c/130f.
  • Store. Remove from the air fryer and allow to cool before placing into your preferred storage container.

How Long Does It Take To Dehydrate Bananas?

If you are wondering how long to dehydrate bananas and if it is faster than other fruits, then you will love that the dehydrated banana chips cook time is JUST 3 hours.

When I first made banana chips in the air fryer, I did them for way too long assuming that they would have a long cook time.

Making it ideal for doing on a Sunday when you are cooking your Sunday dinner and have leftover bananas to think about.

How To Preserve Banana Chips?

This depends on where you have stored them. Your banana chips can last a year if they are sealed in a mason jar in a dark cool pantry.

However, if you are storing your dehydrated bananas in a zip loc bag in a warm house, then expect them to last up to three months.

What Can You Dehydrate?

There are lots of food you can dehydrate and its not just about bananas. In fact, this recipe is number #5 in a summer theme we are running of fruit to dehydrate in the air fryer. Last week it was dehydrated pineapple, the week before it was dehydrated raspberries, and we can’t wait to carry on the theme.

As well as these you can also dehydrate most fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. There is also the option to dehydrate other foods such as marshmallows, potatoes, and beef jerky. Though, those are the dehydrated foods I think of first as there is so much choice.

I recommend that if you are a beginner to dehydrated foods that you start with dehydrated fruit recipes from the berry family.

Notes

Setting. Note that the Power Air Fryer Oven has a weird set up. You have to press fruit and then adjust the time up to 55c and then adjust the cook time.
Lemon. Its essential that you toss your banana in lemon otherwise as they cook you will have ugly brown banana chips that are not as flavoursome and not as firm as they should be.

  3. How thick should the slices be at the most? Tried a batch and look ok but are not crisp right now fresh out of the dehydrater/ air fryer.

    • Hi Mark,
Ours in our recipe were around 1/4 inch and they worked for us, the thinner you go the crispier the banana crisps will be. Or a plan b is to spray them with olive oil when you turn them over this also helps with the crisping 🙂

      How did they turn out?

  4. I don’t know what went wrong. I followed the recipe but mine never did crisp up. I made sure to separate them and even tried adding more time. Basically this was a waste of time for me and I had to throw them out 🙁

    • Hi Vicki,

Sorry they did not work out for you, the only thing that i can think of is either the banana were too thickly sliced or the machine you were using did not work properly. After the time and the extra time there is know reason other than what i have said why the bananas should not have become crispy 🙂

  5. Hi – I am looking into different dehydration recipes for fruits and came across yours. I haven’t tried it as yet because I am a little confused by your recipe. Did you air fry the bananas or dehydrate the bananas – because they’re 2 different things & I have both settings on my Instant Pot. I would also like the temperature setting on both please :0) – Wanda

    • Hi Wanda,

The bananas are dehydrated and we used a air fryer to do them. We used a Power air fryer Oven to dehydrate our fruits so cannot say how the Instant Pot does things as we did not use it for this. They are done on a very low temp for 3 hours at 55c/130f. If you use the air fry option it will just cook them as it does not get down to the low temp, the dehydrate function should let you set the temp low as this is still air frying but on a very low temperature so the fruits dehydrate 🙂

  6. In the recipe it does say press air-fry. I did this at first but temp could not go to 130c. So I stopped and pressed dehydrate and set temp to 130c. And was able to set time to 3 hours. Just waiting for
    results.

    • Hi Terresa,

Yes we used a Ninja Foodi so it has a dehydrate option and goes down really low, only the air fryers that say they can dehydrate go down as low as what you need, but the way you are doing might be ok 🙂

  7. I tried dehydrating for the first time. The banana was cut thin, I did not know about the lemon or oil. Hopefully the next batch I do following your recipe will be better.

My confusion I guess is I dehydrated mine according to the book and it says 135(f) for 8 hours. How did you get yours done in 3? I checked mine at 3 and they weren’t at all done. And even at 8 hours they were still chewy in the middle part.

    • Hi Melissa,

We were surprised as well but they were definitely done, are you using a ninja foodi that looks like ours and the same dehydrating rack? 🙂
