Roasted Garlic In Air Fryer
Frequently, we fall in love with food based upon how it smells or how it looks. If your neighbour is cooking a roast dinner, you’re suddenly hungry and want some.
What about when you walk past a Chinese restaurant, an Indian or even McDonalds?
It might not be the food that we like, but that smell grabs our attention.
One of my all-time favourite food smells is garlic. I just love that Mediterranean smell of roasted garlic.
It is a truly amazing smell.
We used to live in Portugal on the Mediterranean and it is all about the garlic. Garlic is a food that is served with every lunch and dinner and the Portuguese would be lost without it. I would walk down my country lane and there was always a beautiful smell of it.
You’re probably shouting at me and saying; how much you hate garlic breathe or you wish people wouldn’t cook with it.
Well it’s my favourite smell and it would be boring if we all had the same.
Just like mine is roasted garlic, I hate nuts. If I smell peanuts, I am physically sick. But that could also be my nut allergy too.
But back to that smell of the amazing roasted garlic. It is even better in the air fryer because you can cook it in the same foil that you save it in for later, meaning that there is zero washing up and a big supply of delicious garlic for later.

When we were making our first air fryer cookbook (late 2022) we decided that we needed to load it with everyday recipes that was perfect for learning how to use the air fryer.
Roasting garlic in air fryer was one of those recipes.
Then in our 2nd air fryer cookbook (Air Fryer Easy Everyday) we decided to show you how to use this garlic recipe in numerous recipes and have it as part of your cooking. We used it for curry sauce, a lamb roast and so much more.
If you would like to learn how to use the garlic and so much more check out our air fryer cookbooks.
Can You Roast Garlic In An Air Fryer?
Yes you can. Roasted garlic in the air fryer is AMAZING. It is one of those lie changing air fryer hacks that I recommend you do time and time again.
Cooking roasted garlic in air fryer for me is a time saver. Its like you are prepping the garlic cloves ahead of time that you are going to use in recipes for the coming week.
Why Air Fry Garlic?
To be a lazy air fryer home cook of course!
If you are rubbish at the speed of peeling garlic, then roasted air fryer garlic was invented for you.
Once cooked the air fryer roasted garlic is sliced at the top and then you can squeeze out the roasted garlic.
It has a similar texture as just cooked sweet potatoes. A bit soft, but not overly wet.
Can Garlic Go In The Air Fryer?
Yes, garlic can go in the air fryer and it is so good. Garlic is a simple way to flavour your food in the air fryer. You can also use garlic puree, or grate or mince a garlic clove if you prefer.
Can Air Fryer Be Used For Roasting?
Yes, the air fryer can replace your oven as a way of roasting everything. Though note, you cant fit a large roasting pan in an air fryer so you need to adapt.
One way to adapt is to cook a roasting meat in the air fryer, then surround it with the potatoes and vegetables and this is a great way to fit everything in. Favourites include air fryer gammon joint, air fryer roast chicken dinner and of course air fryer pot roast.
How Healthy Is Roasted Garlic?
Roasted garlic is very healthy. In Mediterranean countries this is often a staple of the diet with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. Plus, when you roast garlic in air fryer, it only uses a small amount of seasoning and a drizzle of olive oil making it perfect.
Can You Put Aluminium Foil In Air Fryer?
Whether you are British and call it silver foil or tin foil or American and call it aluminium foil, it is fantastic for the air fryer. It stops your air fryer from getting dirty and because it is made of stronger stuff than parchment paper it will not break when you are moving food around.
Though for our air fryer garlic its all about wrapping it up to stop it from drying out.

Roasted Garlic In The Air Fryer Without Oil?
I don’t recommend roasted garlic without the oil. The oil give it the lovely roasted garlic kind of flavour and also stopping it from getting dry. There is only a small amount of olive oil in this recipe.
How To Store Air Fried Garlic?
You can simply store your air fried garlic in the same foil that you cooked it in. I just transfer it to the fridge once it has cooled down and it was last 3 days in the fridge before it needs using.
Roasted Garlic Air Fryer Ingredients
Garlic – Roasting garlic in the air fryer starts with the garlic. You do it in bulb quantities i.e. you roast a head of garlic. You can do 1 at once in the air fryer up to 8 and can keep the same time and temp.
Oil – A drizzle of extra virgin olive oil is perfect for the garlic, and you can use oil from the bottle or an olive oil spray.
Seasoning – Then for seasoning your garlic its personal choice though we used salt, pepper and some dried basil.
Can You Recommend An Air Fryer?
I often get asked which air fryers I recommend and which one I use. In 95% of our air fryer recipes, we use either the Philips Air Fryer XL or the Cosori XL because they are the best ones, we have found out of many air fryers we have tried over the years. You can click on the links above and read up on them. But if you would rather have a dual air fryer we recommend this Ninja Dual (make sure you order the right one as not all are good) or the Philips Dual.
How To Roast Garlic In Air Fryer?
- Prep. Chop the tops off the garlic bulbs to create a layer of the garlic cloves that are now visible. Then spray with olive oil and season.
- Wrap. Then tightly wrap your garlic bulbs in foil. You can do this individually or 2-3 at once like we did.
- Cook. Place the foil covered garlic package into the air fryer and air fry at 180c/360f for 15 minutes.
- Finish. Loosen the top of the foil to expose the garlic and cook for a further 10 minutes at the same temperature or until you place a fork into the garlic and it is fork tender.
- Cool. Once the garlic bub is cool place it upside down over a plate and squeeze out your garlic. You now have roasted garlic without any peeling.
Now that is how simple it is to roast garlic in the air fryer and now it’s your turn!
How Long To Roast Garlic In Air Fryer?
Because you are roasting a full garlic head, rather than garlic cloves, it takes about 25 minutes. This is also because the garlic to wrapped in foil. Which of course is a good thing as it makes the garlic so tender.
Ninja Foodi Roasted Garlic
If you’re using a Ninja Foodi for this garlic hack, then same time and temp just use the air fryer setting and the air fryer basket.
Sam & Doms Top Tips For Success
It’s all about wrapping in the foil and then half unwrapping for the last 10 minutes. Like when you make air fryer meatloaf, when the garlic is wrapped up it stops it drying out and gives you such a wonderful roasted garlic texture at the end of the cooking time.

Thanks for this recipe, this really is a great way to have garlic ready for adding to anything, so glad i found your blog your ideas are truly amazing!
Could you do this same method with garlic cloves instead of the full bulb?
Hi Priscilla
Yes the problem would be the length of time in the air fryer. I would start at 4 minutes for the separated cloves and then adjust the time as needed until ready 🙂
