What Are Waffle Fries?
Firstly, you might not have heard of waffle fries yet, or like us you might also know them as criss cross French fries.
In a nutshell waffle fries are a cross between potato wedges and French fries.
They taste like potato wedges thanks to the seasoning added to them and use a potato cutter to make them look like waffles.
Can You Air Fry Waffle Fries?
Yes, you can air fry waffle fries. Whether you are cooking frozen waffle fries in the air fryer or homemade, or even reheating waffle fries, they are ideal for the air fryer.
The air fryer adds an amazing crisp to waffle fries that you will never get from the oven and without the high oil of the deep fat fryer.
Why Are Waffle Fries So Good?
This is because they are much crispier than other types of frozen potato fries.
This is because of the holes in them and in my opinion have the best crunch on them compared to other frozen fries’ types.
No extra oil is required when you cook frozen waffle fries in the air fryer saving you a LOT of calories compared to deep fried waffle fries.
You can use any type of waffle fries in the air fryer including the following favourites:
- Pizza Hut Waffle Fries
- Walmart Waffle Fries
- McDonalds Waffle Fries
- McCain Waffle Fries
- Trader Joe’s Waffle Fries
- Costco Waffle Fries
- Sam’s Club Waffle Fries
You can also use any type of air fryer to cook them in too. Whether this is using the Ninja Foodi for your waffle fries or the Philips Air Fryer like we are using.
Are Waffle Fries French Fries?
Yes they are. Waffle fries are a type of French fries. Instead of making your sliced potato into French fries it is put into a waffle fries maker and made into waffle fries instead.
Waffle Fries Vs Curly Fries
I find that waffle fries taste very much like curly fries and also like potato wedges.
The only difference between waffle fries and curly fries is a different type of cutting machine.
Though the crispy crunch on waffle fries is slightly better than curly fries.
So, if you love curly fries then you would love waffle fries.
Frozen Sweet Potato Waffle Fries In Air Fryer
You can also air fry frozen sweet potato waffle fries. They don’t have to be made from white potatoes to be good for the air fryer.
The only BIG difference is that sweet potato takes a little longer to get crispy, therefore add a couple of extra minutes at 200c/400f at the end of the cook time to make way for this.
Loaded Waffle Fries
Want to create your own loaded waffle fries recipe? Then the air fryer makes this so easy. Follow our recipe below for regular air fryer waffle fries and for the last 5 minutes of cooking add in your favourite extras.
- Waffle Fries With Cheese – Add a layer of grated cheese on top and let the air fryer melt it.
- Waffle Fries With Cheese & Bacon – Add a layer of grated cheese and lots of bacon bits. The bacon will even come out crispy once cooked.
How To Reheat Waffle Fries?
If you would like to reheat your waffle fries in the air fryer then you can! Set the temperature to 160c/320f and the time to 4 minutes.
They will be piping hot again, but without you recooking them.
Waffle Fries Air Fryer Ingredients
Fries – To air fry frozen waffle fries you will need a bag of frozen waffle fries from the grocery store. I am using the Criss Cross Fries from Iceland (same thing just different name where we live) but you can use any. You could also cook sweet potato waffle fries.
Spray – I recommend using up an old bottle and refilling it with extra virgin olive oil and then you can use it as your air fryer spray bottle. Then spraying some over your waffle fries to crisp them up.
Seasoning – I find frozen food is already well salted, but you can add some pepper and your favourite seasoning if you prefer, or just have them as they are.
Sauce – Then waffle fries in the air fryer would not be the same without some sauce to dip in. My favourite that is always in my fridge is burger sauce.
Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this air fryer waffle fries recipe, it has just been our Air Fryer. We have this one and its wonderful for many types of air fryer recipes and perfect for quickly cooking frozen food.
