Moist Maker Sandwich
I am one of those people, that gets more excited over the turkey leftovers, than the roast turkey served at the dinner table.
I will make extra sides to go with the roast turkey, knowing that we can’t possibly eat it all.
What I am thinking is that we can use the leftover turkey to make air fryer turkey burgers. That extra mashed potatoes, that extra stuffing and the extra veggie bake, can all be loaded into them to make the best burgers.
I am also dreaming about using a spare turkey breast to make a slow cooker turkey curry and how wonderful it will be to make some air fryer turkey pot pie.
But before I became obsessed with turkey leftovers, it was always turkey sandwiches that you ate.
You would have a plate of sliced and diced turkey sat in the fridge and live off turkey sandwiches for the next 2 or 3 days. They would be served in sliced bread with lots of mayonnaise, sliced tomatoes, and some lettuce.
But gone are those 90’s Christmases of a simple turkey sandwich: Instead in the late 90’s we were introduced to a Friends episode where Ross Geller has his favourite turkey sandwich, aka the moist maker stolen.
Not only did we all love the episode, but we became obsessed with making turkey leftover sandwiches in a totally different way.
Today, is all about an air fryer moist maker sandwich.
What Is Ross’s Sandwich Called?
For me I call Ross’s sandwich the moist maker. After all its all about the middle moist maker that sits in between two slices of bread.
But I know many of my friends refer to it as:
- Turkey sandwich with gravy soaked bread
- Ross thanksgiving sandwich
- Friends thanksgiving sandwich
- The moist maker
- The moist maker sandwich
Or to quote Ross in the Friends episode it is called my thanksgiving leftover sandwich.
What Is The Moist Maker?
The moist maker is a Friends inspired food, that Ross loves, that is stolen in a thanksgiving episode of Friends. His sister Monica makes it for him. Its simply the best turkey leftover sandwich recipe ever. There is a slice of turkey gravy soaked bread added to the middle of the sandwich.
It is called the moist maker because of the way the gravy soaks into the bread.
Or to quote Ross “My sister makes these amazing turkey sandwiches. Her secret is she puts an extra slice of gravy soaked bread in the middle. I call it a moist maker.”
Once you have tried the moist maker, you will understand what all the fuss is about and never make a turkey sandwich another way, ever again.
What Friends Episode Has The Moist Maker?
The famous Friends episode with the moist maker is season 5 and episode 9. I remember watching it at the time with deep fascination as it was the first time I had ever heard of Thanksgiving. As a Brit Thanksgiving is never celebrated and just something you see in the movies.
I love what Ross says in Friends when he gets angry over his stolen turkey sandwich:
- Someone at work ate my sandwich
- My thanksgiving leftover sandwich
- I can’t believe someone just ate it
- Its not just a sandwich
- That sandwich was the only good thing going on in my life
- You ate my sandwich
- Did you confuse it with your own sandwich
- You threw my sandwich away
Its now the tradition in the Milner house to watch old thanksgiving episodes of Friends on thanksgiving and cook something that is classic thanksgiving food on the day. Not very American, but our British thing!
What Was In Ross’s Sandwich?
In a traditional Ross’s sandwich, any of your turkey leftovers are ideal. I recommend that you add:
- Homemade sliced bread
- Turkey gravy
- Sliced turkey breast
- Cranberry sauce
- Stuffing
- Mayonnaise
- Sliced Tomatoes
Though do mix and match with what you have available. For example, outside of Christmas I can not get cranberries or cranberry sauce and don’t like it much either. So, I left out cranberry sauce.
You could also follow this recipe idea for whenever you have a roast dinner and have leftover supplies. Then follow the principle of leftover meat + gravy + stuffing + mayonnaise and you have yourself a delicious comforting sandwich.
Turkey Sandwich With Gravy Soaked Bread
For me the moist maker, is the best part of this leftover turkey sandwich. What I do is grab my instant pot turkey gravy from the fridge first. I will have saved it in the fridge from the day before and it will be much thicker once left overnight and even better for creating that layer of gravy soaked bread.
I will then make sure my bread maker bread is cool so that it is easier to handle.
Then I will soak every third slice of bread into the turkey gravy.
It will be drowned in the bread and then delicately pulled out and added to the middle of the turkey sandwich.
Air Fryer Moist Maker Sandwich
Ingredients
Kitchen Gadgets:
Moist Maker Ingredients:
- 200 g Leftover Turkey Breast
- 200 ml Leftover Turkey Gravy
- 6 Slices Bread
- 4 Tbsp Stuffing
- 1 Tbsp Mayonnaise
- Sliced Tomatoes
- Cranberry Sauce, optional
- Butter, optional
Instructions
- I always start by making the bottom layer of the sandwich. Butter your bread, add a layer of turkey breast, tomatoes and a layer of stuffing.
- Next add a slice of bread into your instant pot and soak both sides in your cold turkey gravy.
- Add the moist maker onto your bottom slice of your sandwich and now add more turkey above the moist maker, some mayonnaise, and some sliced tomatoes. Place the lid on your sandwich.
- Very carefully, so that it doesn’t break, place your turkey sandwich in the air fryer basket. Cook for 5 minutes at 160c/320f.
- Next serve the turkey moist maker while still warm. Though if your bread slices are thick like ours, you will need a napkin or two.
