Instant Pot Chuck Roast. Watch over my shoulder as I share with you how to cook instant pot chuck roast from frozen 3 different ways. An interesting behind the scenes look at cooking chuck roast in the instant pot and ideal for instant pot beginners.
Instant Pot Chuck Roast
After we showed you last week how to cook instant pot frozen pot roast, I thought it would be interesting to take you behind the scenes of our pot roast and some other instant pot chuck roast recipes we made along the way.
That way you can have some fantastic instant pot chuck roast ideas to try out next.
But first, let me tell you why these instant pot chuck roast recipes are ideal for beginners.
That is because, up until a couple of months ago, I had never bought a chuck roast before, or knew what they were.
Call it a cultural thing. Whilst in the USA chuck roast is a HUGE THING, on the other side of the ocean in England, nobody has ever heard of it.
Instead in England we will roast top side (known in the US as top round) and we call chuck by the name of braising steak.
Braising steak will always be sold from the butchers diced and ready for instant pot beef stew and dumplings.
So, what I wanted to do, was instead of always cooking instant pot topside, I wanted to give chuck roast a go.
I ordered about 6 chuck roasts from the butchers and these that you are reading about today, was what we made with the first three.
I have to say that we loved every instant pot chuck roast we cooked and can’t wait to go the rest of them that are currently sat in our freezer.
What Is Instant Pot Chuck Roast Like?
Chuck roast in the instant pot is tender, juicy, and perfect for lots of different meals. You can use chuck roast for tacos, pot roast, roast beef dinners, meal prep, sandwiches and the list goes on and on.
However, what I love most about instant pot chuck roast is that you can cook it for less and you have sliced roast beef, cook it for longer and you have pulled beef.
Plus, don’t forget that chuck roast is known for being a tough cut of meat and the instant pot does an amazing job of cooking it much quicker than the slow cooker.
Instant Pot Frozen Chuck Roast
We cook instant pot chuck roast from frozen. That is because when you cook meat in the instant pot, it is easy to grab it from the freezer and load it straight up into the instant pot.
There is no difference in the tenderness from frozen chuck roast than thawed. Plus, it reduces food waste if dinner comes directly from the freezer into the instant pot.
Where To Buy Frozen Chuck Roast?
I recommend butcher box for buying your frozen chuck roast. They do a fantastic monthly meat subscription service and you can add extra chuck roast to your order or make a chuck roast custom box.
Plus, with your first order you get free bacon!
Instant Pot Chuck Pot Roast
We covered this on the blog last Friday and if you want to use chuck to make a pot roast then check out our instant pot frozen pot roast.
For doing a pot roast the chuck is cooked for longer to make it easy to shred. Then when the chuck is resting, we use the stock to quickly cook the potatoes and carrots to serve with it.
Instant Pot Chuck Roast Meat Only
Sometimes I just want some meat that I can shred and then use for meal prep. That is why it is a good idea to have an instant pot chuck roast meat only recipe to turn to.
We sautéed onion, celery, and carrot in our instant pot. Seasoned it well with salt and pepper and bouquet garni and added beef stock and frozen chuck roast.
While it pressure cooked we cooked our air fryer roast potatoes and then when the chuck roast was done we shredded it.
We also used up the juices to make a yummy beef gravy.
Instant Pot Chuck Roast Beef
What I did was sauté an onion, added garlic and ginger and tinned tomatoes and beef stock. Loaded the beef into the instant pot and it was pressure cooked for half an hour.
After it had rested it was just like tender roast beef. You would think that we had used a premium cut of beef for how good it turned out.
This could become your cheaper version of roast beef to have for Sunday lunch.
Instant Pot Frozen Chuck Roast Cooking Time
The instant pot frozen chuck roast cook time varies depending on the size of your chuck.
I notice many recipes are for thawed chuck and not frozen and you need to add extra when cooking from frozen.
- Instant Pot 1.5lb Chuck Roast = 50 minutes
- Instant Pot 2lb Chuck Roast = 70 minutes
- Instant Pot 2.5lb Chuck Roast = 80 minutes
- Instant Pot 3lb Chuck Roast = 90 minutes
- Instant Pot 4lb Chuck Roast = 100 minutes
Though note, these instant pot chuck roast cook times are for shredding your beef. If you wanted to slice your beef and make it like roast beef, I recommend reducing the cook time by 10 minutes.
If you are cooking thawed chuck roast, reduce the cook time by another 10 minutes.
It is also recommended to have a 10 minute natural pressure release after the instant pot beeps.
