Reheating Mashed Potatoes

If you have followed my recipes on Recipe This for even one day, you will know that I am obsessed with leftovers, saving money on groceries and reheating wherever I can.

As a kitchen gadgets food blogger this is fantastic because I can be reheating mashed potatoes in the instant pot, the slow cooker, the soup maker and the air fryer.

Whilst my little kids (aged 4 and 6) get excited with what mummy is going to make out of the leftovers, my eldest son and hubby roll their eyes until they taste how delicious it is.

I was listening to a Podcast in the run up to Thanksgiving last year and they had a leftover food expert on the show I was listening to. She said you can repurpose anything, but mashed potatoes are way too tricky.

I wanted to scream at the Podcast and say that mashed potatoes, among other great leftovers are perfect for repurposing, making into leftovers, or just reheating.

Today I wanted to show you exactly what us Milner’s do with leftover mashed potatoes, how to reheat mashed potatoes and how to use spare mashed potatoes as a recipe thickener.

Can You Reheat Mashed Potatoes?

Yes, you can. I know many of you are wondering if you can just grab some cooked mashed potatoes and do a quick reheat, well the answer is a huge YES!

I like to do this in the air fryer as I find it’s the easiest kitchen gadget for this.

You simply load your mashed potatoes into an air fryer pizza pan, cake pan or tray and then add a bit of butter on top:

Though, I may have added a bit too much butter, but I love my butter!

Can You Reheat Mashed Potatoes In Slow Cooker?

Have you heard of the Monday Pie? Or tried our slow cooker Monday pie. Its amazing and an old school classic recipe that has been around for decades and is hugely popular in the UK.

Think of it as the leftover’s version of shepherd’s pie. The filling will be the leftovers from your roast dinner and then you will load the top with leftover mashed potatoes.

You can load cold mashed potatoes over the top and then use the slow cooker to reheat your mash.

How To Reheat Mashed Potatoes In Instant Pot?

You can reheat mashed potatoes in the instant pot, using the same system that you are using to reheat mashed potatoes in the air fryer.

Load the leftover mashed potatoes into a cake pan and then add 2 cups of water to your instant pot, add the trivet and then the cake pan. Do a three minute pressure cook and you then have piping hot mashed potatoes.

How To Use Mashed Potatoes As A Thickener?

We have a post just about how to thicken sauces, soups and gravies. And one of the main methods we use is to add in mashed potatoes. You can add just a scoop of mashed potatoes into a stew, or a soup and you then have a creamy sauce.

How To Use Mashed Potatoes In The Soup Maker?

You can also follow the reheat rule in the soup maker. Or what I do is load mashed potatoes into the soup maker and turn it into a creamy soup maker potato soup.

Its fantastic for using up your leftovers and you can throw in other leftover vegetables too. Or transform your leftover meal into a soup like we do in our Soup Maker Boxing Day Soup.

Can I Make Mashed Potatoes Ahead & Reheat?

You certainly can. If this is your plan, then I recommend you follow our method above for the instant pot. Because then you can use a big Pyrex dish and make a good sized batch for family dinners and festive occasions.

Can You Reheat Mashed Potatoes The Next Day?

Yes you can and every Christmas that is what us Milner’s do. We will make ahead everything that we can on Christmas Eve.

We will prepare the roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, stuffing, roast turkey, gravy, vegetable bake, pigs in blankets and so much more on Christmas Eve. Then we will reheat on Christmas Day and it saves us a lot of time out of the kitchen and then we can enjoy family time.

You can do the exact same thing.

Note that mashed potatoes need to be reheated and consumed within 3 days.

How To Reheat Mashed Potatoes?

If you want to reheat meatloaf in the air fryer then this is how it’s done:

  1. Load leftover mashed potatoes into the air fryer baking pan and load into the air fryer basket.
  2. Add cheese or butter or both!
  3. Cook on a medium heat in the air fryer.
  4. Serve.

Best Way To Reheat Mashed Potatoes?

Because I have a LOT of different ways that I reheat mashed potatoes, let me run through with you my personal favourites that I have not mentioned above:

  • Air Fryer Mashed Potato Cakes – This is probably the easiest way to repurpose and reheat your mash. You make them into burger shapes and load them with cheese.
  • Air Fryer Gnocchi – My son Jorge’s favourite way to use up leftover mash. You add in flour, plenty of cheese and some seasonings and then roll out for gnocchi, then make into shapes and air fry. Perfect for loading over soups.

  • 500 g Leftover Mashed Potatoes
  • 2 Tsp Butter
  • Salt & Pepper

Instructions

  • Load leftover mashed potatoes into the air fryer cake pan. Season with salt and pepper and add butter.

  • Air fry for 6 minutes at 180c/360f and serve.

Notes

Temperature. Avoid a high temperature when reheating in the air fryer. Cooking at 200c/400f will result in your mash becoming dried out.
Meaty. You can also add in some spare meat to your leftover mash. Chicken, pork, ham, beef or work well. Avoid using turkey like this though unless you have a good gravy because it can be too dry. Just break up your meat and load it into your mashed potatoes and then air fry.

    You cannot go wrong reheating mash in the airfryer, if you over cook it you get the little burnt bits of potato which are just devine,so i kept mine in longer than you said but your timings were spot on if you do not like the burnt bits 🙂

    Yes me as well, i love the burnt bits that you used to get when making a bubble and squeak with leftovers. Your timings were good but i went with longer.
