Dehydrated Lemons

Even though I don’t eat a lot of lemons or cook with lemons a lot, I am going to miss my huge lemon tree in my garden.

Sadly, I cannot take it with me back to England and I am going to miss being able to grab a lemon when I want one, rather than having to pay for them.

Though, I am not going to miss tripping on bruised and battered lemons on the driveway after our Boxer has thought it was a yellow coloured ball!

In the weeks before moving out, I focused on making an effort with these lemons and creating some new recipes with them.

My first thought was to get the last bit of use out of my air fryer oven (before upgrading) and make some dehydrated lemon slices.

Can You Dehydrate Lemon Slices?

Yes, you can. Lemon slices are fantastic for a quick fruit that you can load into your dehydrator and set and forget.

You can also mix and match lemons with other citrus fruits and dehydrate together, making them perfect for dried citrus slices.

Is Dehydrated Lemon Good For You?

Yes, it is. Many recommend a slice of lemon everyday to keep you in good health. As no extra ingredients are added to the lemon slices it is fantastic for consuming each day.

How To Cut Lemon Slices?

If you want cut lemon slices for drying lemons, I recommend that you use a mandolin (like this one) as it is all about lots of thin slices and its hard to achieve with your own knives.

How To Cut Lemon Slices

I also recommend that you do more lemon slices than you need, that way you can discard the broken pieces of lemon and the ends.

Then place your lemon onto the mandolin and let it do the amazing lemon slices for you.

Dry Lemon Ingredients

Dry Lemon

Air Fryer OvenI recommend this air fryer oven for dehydrating fruit, and it is fantastic because there are three shelves, and you can do a small batch or a large batch of dehydrated lemon.

Storage – You need a plan of action of where you plan to keep your dried fruit. You can keep it simple by using them in drinks straight away (yes I do that), use a zip loc bag (I prefer this one) or you can opt for traditional pantry containers (like this one).

Lemons – If you are wondering what the best lemons for dehydrating are, then the answer is simple, as any will do. Of course, if they are over soft, it makes them very difficult for slicing and you can cut yourself with a mandolin. Therefore, I recommend lemons that are hard rather than soft.

That is, it! You probably think that are complicated ingredients and accessories to dehydrate lemons in air fryer, but there isn’t. It is also a fantastic easy recipe for air fryer beginners.

How To Prepare Dry Lemon Slices?

I love dried lemons because unlike dehydrated blueberries or dehydrated raspberries, no extra ingredients need to be added to the lemons.

You simply just need to get your lemons out of the fruit bowl or in our case off the lemon tree and slice up your lemon with your professional slicer.

If you don’t have time to dehydrate today, you can prepare your dried lemon slices and then dehydrate tomorrow and leave them in the air fryer oven ready for later.

How To Dehydrate Lemons?

  • Prep. Slice your lemons into similar size slices. We recommend a professional slicer (like this one) for this and other dehydrated fruit as it can give an even cut. Then discard the ends.
  • Air fry. Load your sliced lemons onto the air fryer shelf (or shelves) and air fry for 3.5 hours on 55c/130f.
  • Store. Remove from the air fryer and allow to cool before placing into your preferred storage container.

Now you know how to make dry lemon slices, I am sure you want to know how you can make a medley of dehydrated citrus.

Well, dehydrated citrus, or dried citrus as you might call it, is done the exact same way.

dehydrated citrus fruit

Let’s say you dehydrated 3 lemons. Instead, you can do 1 lemon, 1 orange and 2 limes. Then fill up your air fryer with a mix of citrus fruit instead of just lemons.

Then keep the same cook time and the same temperature and you have successfully dried citrus fruit.

Or if you are using small lemons and limes, then swap oranges for satsumas and your cook times will be spot on.

What Temperature Do You Dehydrated Lemons?

The best temperature for dehydrated lemons or dehydrated citrus fruits is 55c/130f. This gives you a quick dehydrate and makes sure your lemons are perfectly dehydrated and ready for using.

What To Do With Dehydrated Lemons?

Use them for cocktails of course. I love to use this dried lemon recipe to make my Christmas Snowball Cocktails. Not heard of it? Then it’s the German answer to the Eggnogg and always includes lemon slices.

Other dehydrated lemon uses could include dehydrated lemon slices into ornaments, made into a Christmas display or used to make pot pourri. Or you can place lemons in jar for decoration.

How Long Do Lemons Last?

This depends on how you choose to store your dried lemons. For example, if you stored your lemons in an airtight container, in a dark pantry, then they will last at least a year.

However, if you stored your lemons in a zip loc bag in a warmer pantry, then the shelf life is more likely to be 2-3 months.

What Can You Dehydrate?

There are lots of food you can dehydrate and it’s not just about lemons and citrus fruit. In fact, this recipe is number #9 in a summer theme we are running of fruit to dehydrate in the air fryer. Last week it was dehydrated oranges, the week before it was dehydrated limes, and we can’t wait to carry on the theme.

As well as these you can also dehydrate most fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. There is also the option to dehydrate other foods such as marshmallows, potatoes, and beef jerky. Though, those are the dehydrated foods I think of first as there is so much choice.

I recommend that if you are a beginner to dehydrated foods that you start with dehydrated fruit recipes from the berry family.

Setting. Note that the Power Air Fryer Oven has a weird set up. You have to press fruit and then adjust the time up to 55c and then adjust the cook time.
Swap. You can have a citrus party and do a mixture of lemons, limes and oranges and keep the same temperature and cook time.
Avoid. Discard lime ends and any lemon slices that has broken as its being sliced as it will not dehydrate as well.
