Bolognese Pizza

The first time I tried Bolognese pizza, would have been when I had ordered a pizza takeaway.

The hubby and I were rather unhealthy in the early 00s and would order a pizza takeaway about 3-4 times a week.

Our favourite topping that we both enjoyed the most, was always a Bolognese pizza.

We would share it and would normally have some fries too.

Years later, we still have a soft spot for a Bolognese pizza, but now we made our own.

We will use Dominic’s bread machine pizza dough and then will either make one big one, or a small one from leftovers.

This Bolognese pizza was originally published in May 2016 and back then it was part of a frugal campaign on Recipe This focusing on just frugal recipes for that month.

Even now, almost five years later I still think of Bolognese pizza is one of the best, most tasty, frugal meals for families.

If you are on a tight budget I recommend you start with a homemade pizza from leftovers from the fridge.

Can You Use Bolognese Sauce For Pizza?

Yes, you can, and Bolognese sauce is ideal for pizza.

It gives it that wonderful meaty flavour and also keeps the costs down at the same time. Maybe you made too much Bolognese when you made lasagne, or you have leftover spaghetti Bolognese. Well you can make use of this Bolognese sauce and load it into a pizza.

Leftover Bolognese Pizza

I love this Bolognese pizza and I often make it at the same time as our air fryer garlic bread or our air fryer pizza. Plus, like garlic bread and a cheese pizza it ticks all the boxes.

It comes from leftovers – I used leftover bread machine pizza dough and leftover Bolognese from the instant pot.

Its not much effort. In fact, I left my four year old in charge of making it. He rolled out the pizza dough and loaded it with Bolognese, cheese and some sliced tomatoes I had sliced for him.

It’s a cheap family dinner. I used leftover pizza dough, leftover Bolognese and a half used bag of cheese that I found in the fridge. Along with a couple of tomatoes I had forgotten about.

Its great for avoiding food waste. I love that you can create sections in your fridge of food that needs using up and then you can focus on meals with those first.

Uses two of my favourite kitchen gadgets. I love combing the uses of the bread machine and the air fryer. They are a genius. While one makes the dough, the other cooks it.

Bolognese Pizza Takeaway

When I think back to ordering pizzas in the early 00’s I remember it was always at least £10 after you added in sides and drinks and then there was the delivery cost.

That of course was for a cheap takeaway place. If I went to Pizza Hut and ordered a Bolognese pizza and toppings, I am sure I could double it.

By follow this recipe and making your own Bolognese pizza takeaway you can beat the prices of a Bolognese pizza at Pizza Hut, Pizza Express or Dominos too.

What Is Bolognese Meat Sauce Made Of?

When I make a Bolognese meat sauce I always include:

  • Ground minced beef
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Tinned Tomatoes
  • Seasoning

Nothing fancy, just a simple Bolognese. Though if the hubby is about I am sure he is loading it with cheese.

How To Make Bolognese Pizza?

Cooking pizza Bolognese is so easy:

  1. Smother pizza dough in leftover Bolognese.
  2. Add as much cheese as your pizza can handle.
  3. Load it up with tomatoes.
  4. Add favourite seasonings.
  5. Air fry + enjoy!

Plus, you can swap that for any pizza toppings of choice. But I find Bolognese pizza very filling and ideal for stretching when cooking on a budget.

Bolognese Pizza In The Air Fryer

If you have not cooked a pizza in your air fryer yet, then you MUST. Pizzas in the air fryer are like pizzas in a pizza oven, just with a longer cook time.

The crisp on the pizza dough is magical and you don’t risk leaving it in the oven for too long and burning it.

Notes

Size. We have made a small pizza so that it will fit in the air fryer basket. It is similar in size to an individual pizza at Pizza Hut. If feeding more people fill more than one pizza pan.
Swaps. You can swap a Bolognese pizza for any pizza toppings or any leftovers that you need to use up.
