Recipe For Soft Boiled Eggs In Microwave
As a child one of my all time favourite breakfasts was soft boiled eggs and soldiers.
You always had cute little egg holders, plenty of toast, and often extra toast with jams, marmalades etc.
It was breakfast heaven and even now, many, many years later I love to make soft boiled eggs for breakfast for the kids to share with me.
I have shown you before air fryer soft boiled eggs, instant pot soft boiled eggs and today, as part of our microwave month I wanted to share with you our recipe for soft boiled eggs in the microwave.
Not as simple as the air fryer or the pressure cooker method, but much quicker and perfect if you are in a rush to get breakfast ready.
Can You Soft Boil An Egg In The Microwave?
Yes, you can. Soft boiled eggs in the microwave are fantastic but you must do it right. If you do soft boiled eggs in the microwave wrong, then you can easily explode the eggs and have a microwave that will need replacing.
How Do You Make A Dippy Egg In The Microwave?
I mentioned above that there is a right way and a wrong way to do soft boiled eggs in the microwave and I am sure you want to know the catch.
Its all about the prick from a needle or a pin.
You prick the bottom of the egg shell and this will help the egg breathe during cooking and get out the moisture out of the egg.
This then stops the egg from exploding and also speeds up the cook time on your soft boiled egg.
Best Way To Cook Soft Boiled Eggs?
The best way to cook soft boiled eggs, out of the different ways that I have tried is in the air fryer.
Its not as quick as the microwave but there is no effort to be made either. You load eggs (no pricking involved) into the air fryer basket and air fry. The cook time is spot on, and you have perfect soft boiled eggs.

What You Need To Soft Boil An Egg In The Microwave
Eggs – I recommend doing up to 4 soft boiled eggs at once in the microwave. Though you can do them in batches and they don’t take long in the microwave to cook.
Water – The soft boiled eggs need to be submerged in a microwave safe container in water to be cooked in the microwave.
Pin – You will also need a pin, you’re a needle or something similar with a pointed edge to prick into the bottom of the egg shell.
Container – Then for your microwave safe container I recommend a Pyrex measuring jug as its deep enough for the eggs to submerge and with its handle its easiest for taking in and out of the microwave.
Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this microwave soft boiled eggs recipe it has just been our Panasonic Microwave Oven. We have this one and its wonderful for many types of microwave recipes.

Soft Boiled Egg In Microwave
Instructions
- Let your tap run until you have warm/hot water. Then pour into your measuring jug.
- Prick the bottoms of your large eggs with a pin or a needle to allow the moisture to come out of the eggs during the cooking process.
- Place the large eggs into the warm water and then place the measuring jug into the microwave.
- Microwave your eggs for 3 minutes on low.
- Once cooked quickly remove the eggs, place into egg holders and remove the tops to stop them from cooking further and to prevent them from turning into hard boiled eggs.
I’m definitely trying this but not sure what ‘low’ is on my microwave as it’s power settings are in ‰ from 10 to 100.
Hi Richard,
I would thought anything below 50% would be considered low, so i would try 30% also depending on what wattage your microwave is, ours is 750 watt which quite low 🙂
Mine turned out wonderful just cooked, thanks for the instructions they worked really well for me.
Remember to cold water shock the eggs when cooking them is over, to prevent further cooking and also to help the shell separate easily from the egg
