Instant Pot Turkey Neck Soup

Instant Pot Turkey Neck Soup is something that was a last minute, not thought out Instant Pot recipe that is now going to feature in the Milner house every time that we enjoy roast turkey with all the trimmings.

I last cooked a whole turkey for Christmas 2000 and haven’t cooked one since. It is not because I can’t, or that I am worried about dry turkey syndrome, it is just that Dominic is a chef and it’s his favourite job.

At Christmas he will have the job of the roast turkey and I will be in charge of the trimmings.

I will cook the roast potatoes, the homemade stuffing, the pigs in blankets, the gravy, the vegetable bake and of course the roasted parsnips.

Dominic will roast the turkey and help me with the prep, as me doing prep is like watching paint dry.

I am not kidding when I say that I am that slow!

But one part of the kitchen I excel at is using leftovers and making sure we don’t suffer from food waste.

I love using everything up.

So, when Dominic was showing me the size of the turkey neck that he was about to throw in the bin, I was screaming at him to keep it as we can get a lot of use out of it.

5 minutes later it was in the Instant Pot and our Instant Pot Turkey Neck Soup was born.

There is no point sugar coating it, the pictures for our turkey neck soup in the Instant Pot are far from beautiful.

That is because there was no digital camera coming out, just my Iphone 7. There were no plans about lighting, which were terrible last Christmas Eve and I just took the pictures as it happened and even though the food looks ugly it is as real life as you’re going to get.

The ingredients were prepped and thrown in the Instant Pot at the last minute. We were too busy prepping the rest of the Christmas food to care about how things looked.

But our Instant Pot Turkey Neck Soup tastes delicious and it’s the turkey neck soup that keeps giving back over and over again.

You see make turkey neck soup with your turkey leftovers and you have a natural source to add to meals whenever you have a recipe that calls for chicken or turkey stock.

We packed up our turkey neck soup into freezer containers and loaded them into the freezer once cool.

Then even three months later in March, we could grab some from the freezer and use it in our Instant Pot recipes.

Cooking Turkey Neck Soup In The Instant Pot

This Instant Pot Turkey Neck Soup is perfect for cooking in the Instant Pot. That is because, like the slow cooker, it will cook the turkey neck, until it is completely tender.

And then you can remove the turkey neck meat from the bone and use it as your dream turkey stock.

A bit like the way you claw away at a pork shoulder when making pulled pork.

The Instant Pot we have, that we used to make our Turkey Neck Soup in, is the Instant Pot Duo and you can order it here or read our Instant Pot Review.

How To Cook Turkey Neck Soup In The Instant Pot?

It is so easy to cook turkey neck soup in the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker.

You add to the Instant Pot:

  • Turkey Neck
  • Carrots
  • Seasoning
  • Liquid

Then cook the turkey neck on manual pressure for 30 minutes. Because there is not a lot in the Instant Pot, it helps to tenderise the turkey neck and give you the best tasting turkey neck soup that you’ve ever had.

Instant Pot Turkey Neck Soup Vs Instant Pot Turkey Stock

The benefit of our turkey neck soup recipe is that it can be what you want it to be. It can be Instant Pot Turkey Neck Soup or add a little more liquid to it during the cooking process and it can be Instant Pot Turkey Stock.

Even though I bagged it up into the freezer and called it Instant Pot turkey neck soup, in reality I have used it more as a stock than a soup.

My favourite use (so far) has been to add it to an Instant Pot Potato Corn Chowder.

MORE Instant Pot Leftover Ideas

I love cooking with leftovers, and it is a HUGE passion of mine. I love the thrill of stretching food that little bit further and how much food you can make for you and your family.

I also love filling the freezer with what I didn’t eat and saving it for later.

Recipe Ingredients:

  • Peel and dice the carrots and place them in the Instant Pot.
  • Add to the Instant Pot the seasoning, leaving half of the poultry seasoning for later and 250ml of water and mix well.
  • Place the turkey neck on top, season the turkey neck with extra salt and pepper and place the lid on the Instant Pot.
  • Set the valve to sealing and cook for 30 minutes on manual pressure.
  • Use quick pressure release (QPR) and remove the turkey neck from the Instant Pot. Shred the turkey from the neck bone and place the meat back into the Instant Pot.
  • Add an extra tablespoon of poultry seasoning and blend until you have a creamy turkey neck soup.

I am suggesting it is enough to feed four people, because it made 4 good sized portion sizes for the freezer. If each time you’re using it for stock it could easily do 4 big meals for 4 people each time. It is important that the turkey neck cooks in the Instant Pot for at least 30 minutes.
Otherwise the turkey will NOT be tender, and it will be hard to shred the turkey. If you don’t feel the turkey neck soup is creamier enough, I recommend adding in some coconut milk. I found that when I took the turkey neck out of the Instant Pot that the meat fell off the bone like when you have ribs. If it doesn’t feel that tender, put the Instant Pot back on for a further 10 minutes.

    • Hi Jessica,

When we made this the water we used is just to make sure the IP comes to pressure. It was enough for us all 2 adults and 2 children but also we like a good thick soup and this is how it turned out, if you like it more runny then double the water but also add more flavour to the soup 🙂
