Delicious goat stew in slow cooker. Inspired by my love for Portuguese and Spanish goat stew, this recipe is easy to make and freezes well too.

Using the slow cooker setting of the Ninja Foodi, but works well with any slow cooker, we are serving our goat stew with some brown rice for an easy healthy family meal.

Goat Stew In Slow Cooker

Goat Stew

If I hadnโ€™t travelled to Spain so many times and previously lived in Portugal, I doubt I would be so team goat and love it so much.

In Portugal pork or porco as its called locally, is the go-to meat. That is because it is so cheap. This is followed by chicken. Ask a supermarket butcher for anything else, and you will be told that chicken and pork is all they have or will want you to pay a lot for some low-quality beef.

But Portugal makes up for it seasonally. They have the best beef shin at Christmas time and I will bulk buy it, freeze it and save it for later.

Then at Easter you have goat. Sold as a mix of goat pieces and so good, that I found myself trying it a few years ago and falling in love with it.

If you have not had goat before, then it tastes like lamb, its just much leaner.

So, if you love lamb, you will love goat.

One of the easiest beginner recipes for goat is a hearty goat stew and that is what we are sharing with you today.

What This Goat Stew Is Not

You might be thinking goat stew = stew goat or a Caribbean goat stew. Or even a Nigerian goat stew. Well, that is what this goat recipe is not. Instead, it is a Mediterranean stew inspired by the delightful stews that you get with goat in Spain and Portugal. So, if you donโ€™t like spicy food, then this is more for you.

What Is The Best Cut Of Goat For Stew?

I always think of goat stew as like for like with our slow cooker lamb stew. So imagine if you are doing a lamb stew, shoulder would be the best to use. But because you are slow cooking, it can be a slow cooking cut too such as boneless goat leg.

Does Goat Meat Get Softer The Longer You Cook It?

Yes, it does. Goat meat like other stewing meats, gets more tender the longer it is cooked slow. We recommend for the best slow cooked goat stew that you cook for at least 4 hours on high or 7 hours on low.

Pressure Cooker Goat Stew

If you have a pressure cooker, such as an instant pot, you can pressure cook your stew instead. Follow our goat slow cooker stew and then instead of 4 hours on high opt for 45 minutes pressure cook, followed by a 15 minute natural pressure release.

Goat Stew Ingredients

Goat Stew Ingredients

Goat โ€“ We had a kilo (2.2lbs) of chopped boneless goat meat for our stew. You can do a bigger or a smaller batch depending on how much of it you have.

Peppers โ€“ We used a pack of mini mixed peppers. They are so cute and donโ€™t need much prep and give you a good mix of the different coloured peppers. You can of course swap for 1.5 regular sized peppers.

Tomatoes โ€“ Cans of tinned tomatoes are fantastic for making a stew with and give a great balance of flavour. You can use finely chopped or just regular ones.

Stock โ€“ I also recommend some stock. We make ours in the instant pot (instant pot veggie stock recipe), then freeze it and its perfect for using with the slow cooker.

Onion, olive oil and garlic โ€“ You canโ€™t do mediterranean food without onion, olive oil and garlic and we have included 1 onion along with garlic puree.

Wine โ€“ Because wine is so cheap and tastes good, you will often find it in Mediterranean cooking. You donโ€™t need a lot and if feeding kids they canโ€™t taste it.

Seasonings โ€“ For seasoning your stew goat recipe we have included salt, pepper and dried thyme along with parsley, oregano and sweet paprika.

Can You Recommend A Slow Cooker?

I often get asked which slow cooker I recommend and which one I use. In 95% of our slow cooker recipes, we use the Ninja Foodi and its slow cooker setting. Because the Ninja Foodi is an all in one cooking pot we can sautรฉ, air fry, slow cook, and even dehydrate and make yoghurt, all from the same cooking pot.ย

Plus, we recommend you head over to our slow cooker recipes category as we have more than 100 tried and tested slow cooker recipes and have been using slow cookers for 18 years. Or more specifically check out all our ninja foodi recipes.

How To Cook Goat Stew?

goat-stew-in-slow-cooker-step-by-step
  • Sautรฉ. Start by adding extra virgin olive oil to your cooking pot and once it is warm and sizzling adding the sliced peppers and onion and sauteing. Continue the sautรฉ to brown the goatโ€™s meat.
  • Add. Next give the slow cooker a stir, then add in the seasonings, tinned tomatoes, red wine, and stir.
  • Position. Find a position in the centre to submerge your frozen stock or you can pour stock in at this point if you prefer.
  • Cook. Place the lid on the slow cooker and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 7 or until the goat meat is nice and tender.
  • Add. Stir in frozen peas and do a taste test. If it needs extra seasoning add a little more, before serving.

And I am sure you can see now how simple and easy this simple goats stew recipe is to prepare and cook.

Goats Stew In A Crockpot

We also are the proud owners of 2 Crockpots and you can also make the recipe in the crockpot. If you have a Crockpot that can go on the stovetop, then do the sautรฉ bit on there, or skip it if you donโ€™t.

Though what we have noticed is that Crockpots can be faster cooking. So if that is you, I would recommend 3.5 hours on high instead of 4.

Sam & Doms Top Tips For Success

We love our slow cooker stew recipes. They are fantastic for dumping the ingredients in the slow cooker and coming back to it later. The best thing, though is that you can mix and match the ingredients in season to make your ideal stew. For example if you hate peppers you could swap them for butternut squash or sweet potatoes or even pumpkin.
