Halloumi Burger
Yesterday we shared with how to make delicious air fryer pork and apple burgers using just Aldi produce. Well today, we are back again with the same theme, but this time making a scrumptious halloumi burger in the air fryer using Aldi produce.
I love that the best pairing for halloumi is Mediterranean vegetables and when I found some Mediterranean veggies in Aldi, I bought some Halloumi and had a great idea.
What if…… instead of pairing your halloumi burger with the usual salad garnish that instead it was served with summer veggies?
Then both the Mediterranean vegetables and the halloumi could be cooked at the same time, and then loaded into ciabatta rolls with mayonnaise.
It would be the easiest ever air fryer burgers too, because the halloumi needs hardly any prepping, the coleslaw is already mixed, the veggies are already prepped, and you are literally throwing everything together.
Well, I tried it and OMG Aldi and its amazing produce did not let me down at all and the Ninja Foodi air fryer did an amazing job of working its magic.
I would also say that there is the same effort in making these than frozen burgers in the air fryer but of course these halloumi burgers are much healthier.
Is Halloumi Healthy?
Halloumi is healthier than many other cheeses, but I wouldn’t consider it to be 100% healthy. I know I know! That sounds like a politician not answering a question properly.
But halloumi is a healthier alternative to some cheeses and best of all, it is perfect if you want to increase protein and salt in your diet.
I suffer from a low blood pressure and thanks to the salt it makes me feel so good. And it’s a great way to reduce your meat consumption.
Can Burgers Be Healthy?
Yes, they can if you make your own and cook them in the air fryer.
By cooking burgers in the air fryer, excess fat goes into the bottom of the air fryer, and it helps reduce the fat and grease in your burger.
Plus, you can make your own burgers for the air fryer and when I do this, I always do them without breadcrumbs and my homemade burgers are often much lower in calories compared to shop bought or from fast food establishments.
Or if you are want even healthier burgers and even lower in calories then start with our air fryer burger in a bowl recipe.
What Is A Halloumi Burger Made Of?
A halloumi burger is made of a big piece of halloumi that you have usually seasoned before cooking.
It will be a rectangle shape and will replace a regular burger patty. You can then load it into a burger bun like you would with a regular burger and have it with the sides and toppings you would have with any burger.
Because halloumi has a high melting point it means that you can air fry the halloumi and it will be warm and have a grilled texture to it.
This is our halloumi patty after it has been air fried:
What Goes Well With Halloumi?
Halloumi with it being from Cyprus goes well with a lot of Mediterranean flavours. It is best paired with Mediterranean veggies like we are doing today.
But you can also add lemon, honey, mint, chilli or even some chorizo.
Crispy Halloumi Burger
If you would like a crispy halloumi burger, then nothing does a greater job than the air fryer.
You can spray your halloumi patty with extra virgin olive oil and then season it with your favourite Mediterranean dried herbs, then air fry it.
The herbs, the oil and the air circulation will turn it into a delicious crispy halloumi burger.
Halloumi Burger Recipe Ingredients
Halloumi – I recommend one pack of halloumi for each burger. Or if you want less halloumi and want to focus more on halloumi burger toppings, then you can slice it in half lengthways to make two thinner ones.
Rolls – I am using some Aldi ciabatta rolls as they are perfect for a Mediterranean style burger and taste so good when paired with halloumi.
Veggies – Of course, this halloumi burger recipe is made better because of the Mediterranean veggies that is served with. I bought a little pack of them from Aldi and air fried them with the halloumi. You can do the same or slice up some veggies.
Tomatoes – I also added some leftover cherry tomatoes from the fridge into the air fryer and these were brilliant for even more flavour.
Coleslaw – I notice coleslaw is on reduced all the time in Aldi and its fantastic for bulking up a burger and then eating it over a few days in salads etc.
Seasonings – Then for your halloumi burger seasoning, I recommend salt, pepper, basil, thyme, and oregano.
Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this halloumi burger recipe it has just been our Ninja Foodi. We have this one and its an air fryer and electric pressure cooker in one and makes amazing burgers.
Plus, we recommend you head over to our ninja foodi recipes category as we have many Ninja Foodi recipes and have been using air fryers for 10 years.
How To Make Halloumi Burgers?
- Load. Because the Mediterranean veggies have a longer cook time, you will want to load them into the air fryer basket and give them a 5 minute head start.
- Season. Remove your halloumi from the packaging, place on a clean chopping board and season. Do the same with your cherry tomatoes.
- Load. When the air fryer beeps add your halloumi patties along with your cherry tomatoes and air fry for a further 12 minutes.
- Serve. Load your halloumi burgers into burger buns with your mediterrnean veggies, add coleslaw and add mayonnaise.
And I am sure you can see now how easy it is to air fry halloumi burgers and why it has become one of my favourite cheap dinners.
Halloumi Burger Tips & Tricks
- We find halloumi rather boring unless it is well seasoned. Because halloumi comes from the Mediterranean the best seasoning is oregano, basil, and thyme.
- Mediterranean veggies take longer in the air fryer, than halloumi. To stop your burgers from going cold, start cooking the veggies first.
- Make it more fun and add avocado and make halloumi and avocado burgers instead.
Interesting Air Fryer Trick – Add a spray of extra virgin olive oil and then add your seasonings. The seasonings will stick to the oil and this will create an amazing crispy flavour layer.
Can you reheat your halloumi burgers? Yes, you sure can. Simply load back into the air fryer basket and air fry for 5 minutes at 160c/320f.
Can you make ahead your air fryer burgers? You sure can. Prep everything and load it into the fridge and cook when you are ready to eat.
