Cooking Lamb In Slow Cooker
This slow cooker lamb roast is an updated post. We choose a very special day the first time we cooked lamb in the slow cooker.
I remember the date like it was yesterday it was my husband Dominic’s 40th birthday and I was also 9 months pregnant with Jorge who is now an adorable 4 and a half year old.
I wanted us to have something special to eat for his 40th because we couldn’t go anywhere for fear of my waters breaking and didn’t want to plan anything special for this very reason.
I suggested to Dominic a slow cooker roast lamb.
Just because I know how much he loves lamb (I am not a big lamb eater) and it was better than nothing for his special day.
Plus, if my waters broke, he could come home to lamb later.
We slow cooked a delicious lamb shoulder and then he ate it so fast, out of fear that he wouldn’t get to finish his meal. After all, you can’t leave lamb, can you?
That was on the Saturday night and just before 9am on the Monday morning Jorge made a fast appearance.
Now it is great fun to have a double birthday celebration of father and son and I now want to turn Dominic’s birthday into a slow cooker lamb celebration, as it seems wrong not to.
Today, I would like to show you how to cook lamb in the slow cooker and why it is so incredible.
Can You Cook Lamb In A Slow Cooker?
Yes you can. I love to cook a lamb shoulder joint the most in my slow cooker. If you have not done a lamb joint in slow cooker before, then think of it as the best cut of lamb for slow cooking, as well as the easiest.
If you are new to the slow cooker and want something SIMPLE then it doesn’t beat slow cooker roast lamb.
But you don’t have to stop there as you could also do leg of lamb, lamb ribs or even lamb chops in the slow cooker.
Can You Put Raw Lamb In A Slow Cooker?
Yes you can. Raw lamb is fantastic in the slow cooker and I have done many different types. Though my favourite is a lamb shoulder joint.
A lamb shoulder joint is AMAZING and you can mix and match flavours, you can make it pulled lamb by leaving it in the slow cooker for longer, or you can go down the traditional route of a roast lamb dinner.
Do You Have To Brown Lamb Before Slow Cooking?
It is not essential to brown lamb before slow cooking, but it will make your lamb taste a LOT better.
I will brown my lamb first as I have a slow cooker that is safe for sauteing on the hob. But if I didn’t have one, I would not bother browning. Just because I don’t want to create extra washing up just for the sake of browning a slow cooker roast lamb shoulder.
Is Lamb Leg Or Lamb Shoulder Better For Slow Cooking?
Lamb shoulder is recommended for slow cooking because it is a fatter cut of lamb and needs to be slow cooked to become tender.
Whilst a lamb leg is a better cut of meat and can be cooked in many different ways.
Both lamb leg and lamb shoulder are ideal for the slow cooker, but I feel it’s a waste of money to cook a lamb leg in there when you could use a lamb shoulder.
How To Cook Lamb In Slow Cooker?
This is how crazy simple it is to slow cook lamb shoulder:
- Brown lamb shoulder
- Load everything into the slow cooker.
- Slow cook + serve.
You can probably see now why I am so obsessed with cooking lamb in the slow cooker.
How Long To Slow Cook Lamb?
Like many typical slow cooker recipes, the time is rather common.
4 hours on high, or 7 hours on low will produce delicious roast lamb.
However, if using the instant pot slow cooker for your roast lamb add 2 extra hours because the slow cooker is not as powerful and an extra hour for a Ninja Foodi.
How Long Can You Leave Lamb In A Slow Cooker?
This depends on why you want to leave your lamb in the slow cooker. If its because you want to transform your lamb shoulder into pulled pork, then add two more hours to the cook time.
If you want to leave lamb in the slow cooker for longer because you are at work, then I would recommend 2 more hours but cook it on low instead of high.
If you want to keep the lamb warm, then you can turn the slow cooker off and keep the lamb in there for another two hours and it will stay at temperature.
Don’t go beyond these suggestions though as you could end up with your lamb drying out.
Roast Lamb In Slow Cooker No Liquid
I love to add some lamb stock to my lamb shoulder joint because it gives it a wonderful flavour. BUT it is not essential to the cooking of a joint in the slow cooker.
You see, lamb is a fatty meat and produces a lot of its own liquids so if you want to cook roast lamb in the slow cooker with no liquid then go for it!
Slow Cooker Lamb Roast & Vegetables
If you want to cook slow cooker lamb roast with vegetables, then you can. Simply strain the lamb and remove any fat from the slow cooker an hour before it is due to be done.
Then add in vegetables and cook for the final hour with a mix of your favourite vegetables and the lamb.
You could also add in potatoes to your lamb too and then you have a wonderful dinner of roast lamb, potatoes, and vegetables.
