Making Bread In A Bread Maker
We had a bread maker machine many years ago. In the end it was sold and only used about twice. As I recall it was a wedding present when we got married in the beginning of 2003.
It was a great bread machine, it just came along at a time, when we were just not that into making our own bread.
In fact, back then we had that shameful processed foods diet. Most of our food came from Aldis and it would involve every type of frozen breaded chicken and fish that you could think of.
It was then served with frozen chips or even vegetables from a can.
Clearly, we were young then and didnโt know much better!
But in late 2017, we bought another bread maker. This time we knew we would make use of it and that the bread maker would make delicious cheap bread for us and our family.
Not just for a cheap loaf of bread, but also for other things too such as making bread maker pizza dough.
We got our bread maker in the Black Friday Deals. I call this my electric buying time as its when I buy vast amounts of electricals, when they are at their best price.
During the 2017 Black Friday Deals we got our bread maker, a new laptop and new electrical presents for the kids for Christmas.
When we got our bread maker out, we set to work. We read through the instructions and thought to ourselves that the art of how to make bread in a bread maker, must be so much more difficult than this.
Were we missing something? It seems not as our bread was soon out of the bread maker, being sliced and then served with melted butter on top.
Just because warm bread with melted butter on is so amazing!
We have tweaked it a little. In fact, we are here today in 2020 with more info, a better recipe and lots of great tips for using a bread maker.
After all, we have had almost 2.5 years with our bread maker now.
But this tweaked recipe is the BEST when it comes to how to make bread in a bread maker.
So, enjoy and let the freshly homemade bread smell, take over your kitchen the way it has taken over ours.
Do I Need A Bread Maker To Make Bread?
Technically, no.
You can of course make your own bread at home. But let me tell you now it takes a while. With making your own bread without a bread maker you are talking about 3 hours.
The time taken to mix ingredients, to knead, to knead some more, to allow it to prove. And the list goes on and on.
But if you want to make bread on a regular basis then you NEED a bread maker.
They donโt cost the earth and its like owning an instant pot. Thatโs because just like the instant pot pressure cooker, you literally dump and start.
Dump the ingredients into the bread maker, press the bread button and come back to perfectly cooked homemade bread.
The time to cook a good bread loaf is 1 hour and 48 minutes. But note that it is JUST 3 minutes of prep. Unlike making your own bread where you have a lot of prep time.
Can You Make Bread With Plain Flour In A Bread Maker?
Absolutely! BUT let me tell you now when you make bread with plain flour in a bread maker, it will NEVER taste as good as making bread with a quality strong bread flour.
A bit like the quality of the taste between organic food and cheap food. You can always taste the difference and you get what you pay for.
I have made bread in the bread maker more times with cheap plain flour than I have with quality flour.
But now what I do is wait until one of the expensive bread flour brands has a sale and bulk buy.
Here is the branded bread flour I use the most:
This was purchased on yellow sticker clearance, meaning that it was reduced in price because the bag was slightly torn.
What Do You Need To Make Bread In A Bread Maker?
Firstly, a good bread maker is essential, and some people like to have a few bread maker accessories to use in their day to day bread making.
Beyond the bread maker, these accessories are not essential, but they make making bread in the bread maker EASIER:
Though out of those 3, if I was going to choose just ONE it would be the bread slicer and storage. We have these in the Milner kitchen, and they cut perfectly sliced homemade bread.
Another option that many people like to buy is their own homemade bread mix.
Where everything is mixed for you and you just have your wet ingredients left to load into the bread maker. Here is an example of one.

Bread Maker Cost Per Loaf?
I thought it would fun to compare notes and to see just how cheap our bread maker bread is, compared to buying shop bought bread.
Firstly, the price of a large loaf of bread is about 1,99โฌ a loaf. Or this is discounted down to half price (or slightly less) if they have a deal on it. This bread is on pink sticker. This means it is close to its sell by date and must be used very soon.
This is about the same size of one of our loaves that we have just made. So, for an equal price compare we need to be making our bread for a lot less than the usual price of 1,99โฌ for it to be worth our while.
How To Make Bread In A Bread Maker Ingredients Cost Per Loaf:
- Plain Flour = 0,18โฌ
- Sugar = 0,05โฌ
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil = 0,13โฌ
- Milk = 0,02โฌ
- Salt = 0,005
- Yeast = 0,07โฌ
- Total Cost Per Bread Loaf = 0,45โฌ/$0.52
- Total Cost Per Serving = 0,11โฌ/$0.13
Or if you use a premium quality flour such as Allinsons, then the price goes up to 99 cent a loaf. But if you compare the 99 cent a loaf to a premium braqnd of bread you are still better off.
Wow. I mean how can something so delicious that tastes so luxurious just cost 11 cents per person. Then if you compare it to the 1,99 cent price that we are currently buying a same sized bread loaf, this is a great saving and makes you realise just how big the mark up is on supermarket bread.
I should also mention that the bread I photographed at the supermarket was the cheap as chips variety, so imagine how much you would have paid for the branded bread.
If you havenโt done so yet, then you seriously need to be following our how to make bread in a bread maker recipe, just to see how cheap and amazing it really is!
Plus, remember how good homemade bread tastes compared to shop bought!
Sorry having a “senior moment” here the recipe states 200 ml water, 50 ml milk -but in the instructions there is no mention of when to add the milk. Also if I wanted to put cheese and bacon in the mixture add that before the yeast?
Sorry for all the questions/
Hi Annie,
it is at the same time of the rest of the ingredients. After the water, but before the yeast is added on top.
kind regards

May be missing reading something but what type of yeast do you use Active Dry Original Yeast or RapidRise Instant Yeast please?
Hi Annie,
i believe any dry yeast works fine, we use standard dry active yeast as they only have one type ๐
Made this for my dad for fathers day and i have to say i can not believe how easy it is and how good it tastes. Thank you.
Best bread i have ever tried. Came out perfectly and so easy. Makes me glad i got my bread maker.
Loved it.
My first time making bread in the bread maker and so, so good.
Never going to buy bread again!
Do you make any other bread flavors in your machine?
Hi Phillip,
Not yet but I hope to soon. I tend to just make gluten free, white flour, wholemeal flour etc and not many other varieties.
For me right now the bread maker is great for just getting some bread on fast when we are in a rush for something to go with dinner.
Kind regards
Sam

Homemade bread is a thing of great beauty, makes the house smell amazing! Shame it never lasts until it cools in these parts though ๐ฎ
I’ve never made bread before, but I love how easy this recipe is! Thanks for sharing!
I need instructions. In my maker you add ingredients and maker mixes then it bakes. Question is, how and when do you remove the mixer blade before dough bakes other wise looks like the mixer blade bakes into bread.
Hi Chale,
Yes the mixer blade cooks inside the bread and when you tip the bread out our mixer blade just stays in the baking dish, yes they can be a mixer blade hole but it is not too big, but with ours if i took the blade out before baking there would be a hole in the pan, so this is why we leave it in ๐
