How often do you go on a day out, get super excited over the food and then it becomes a total let down?

Back in October we took the kids pumpkin picking. It had a lot of hype (just outside York in England) and had huge fields for picking your own pumpkins, as well as a farm shop and a farm café.

It wasn’t the closest pick your own farm near our house, but I thought the café and the farm shop was worth a trip.

They then had this terrible queue that went away from the café, that it wasn’t until I had ordered, that I actually realised I had queue jumped!

Then the food came.

Jorge’s mac and cheese was amazing but everything else was a let down especially this:

Smartie Cookie Recipe

It was the worst smartie cookie I had ever had. It was hard, it was over cooked, it wasn’t soft like a giant smartie cookie should be and I was really disappointed.

I said to the kids, next weekend we will update our air fryer smartie cookie recipe and remind ourselves what yummy smartie cookies are really like!

Plus, as well as our free newsletter, we also have a free air fryer mini course. It is ideal for air fryer beginners or those that want to get more confident with their air fryer. The free course runs for 5 days with a new lesson delivered each day to your inbox.

What To Do With Smarties?

Make smartie cookies of course! Smartie cookies are amazing and if you have not made them yet, then I recommend you do.

Plus, it makes a fantastic alternative to classic air fryer chocolate chip cookies.

Or if you don’t have smarties, you could swap it for many other similar chocolates.

Can You Put Smarties In Cookies?

Yes, you sure can! You can load up crushed smarties into your chocolate cookie mix and then you will have wonderful chunks of smarties in each bite you make into your cookies.

You can also make chocolate biscuits with smarties on top.

Though of course, I love chocolate smartie biscuits and will crush some into the cookie mix and add smarties on top.

What Are Smartie Cookies?

Smartie cookies is a popular British chocolate cookie, or us Brits call them chocolate biscuits. Though in Scotland and parts of Ireland they are referred to as biscuits with smarties on top.

Unlike a chocolate chip cookie that is loaded up with chocolate chips we use our favourite smarties chocolate instead.

It would be similar in the US to the monster cookie and is perfect for a number of seasons and is not just for Christmas.

You can make several variations of your smartie cookies such as adding green food colouring for grinch Christmas cookies or using orange colouring for Halloween.

I often think of smartie cookies and smartie chocolate biscuits as two totally different things.

To me the chocolate biscuits is the small ones that you buy in a pack from the supermarket.

I then think of smartie cookies to me the giant smarties cookies that you buy from the bakery section in Asda. That are sat alongside the caramel ones and the galaxy ones.

For this recipe we have made giant smartie cookies. Taking our classic chocolate biscuit dough and dividing it into 4 equal parts to make 4 giant cookies.

You could of course, divide it into 10 and have regular small cookies if that is more your thing.

You’re probably wondering how my smarties cookie dough comes together.

Well, I am a HUGE bero fan and use my variation of their chocolate chip cookies recipe.

In fact, it’s the same recipe I use in our air fryer chocolate chip cookies. But instead of chocolate chips or chocolate chunks, it is then replaced with smarties.

It is one of the most simple cookie recipes you can make. Plus, if say its Halloween or Thanksgiving and you have leftover chocolate you can mix and match ingredients.

The main ingredients that go into smartie cookies include:

As well as this we used our Philips Air Fryer XL to cook our smartie cookies. If you have not got an air fryer yet, then I highly recommend getting this one. They are a life changer in the kitchen, and they are perfect for making cookies in.

Smartie cookies with margarine. I was raised in Yorkshire and we always used margarine in baking. In fact, we often used margarine more so than butter.

As a child I rarely had any butter. You can make smartie cookies with margarine or butter, it is totally up to you.

Smartie cookies with self raising flour. The self raising flour is a MUST and I am always shocked when I see people not using it and then having to add in other ingredients.

Smartie cookies without baking powder. You don’t need any baking powder in my smartie cookies. In fact, I don’t think I ever owned any baking powder until I was in my 30’s.

Smartie cookies without brown sugar. Brown sugar ruins smartie cookies so please don’t add it in. Instead with our smartie cookies recipe we focus on white caster sugar instead.

Smartie cookies without egg. We have readers with egg allergies, but that is not the reason for going egg free in our smartie cookies, it is because the type of cookie dough combines with milk and doesn’t need any eggs.

How To Make Smartie Cookies?

air fryer smartie cookies step by step

  • Shape. Next divide your smarties cookie dough into four equal parts for giant cookies or into 8-10 for regular sized cookies. Then make into cookie shapes.
  • Cook. Load into the air fryer and air fry for 8 minutes at 180c/360f.
  • Serve. Add extra smarties on top of your cookies and then serve with milk.

Can You Freeze Smartie Cookies?

Yes, you sure can. It’s a fantastic way to make ahead your smartie cookies and then freeze them for later. Or if you have plenty of leftover smartie cookies, it’s a great way to keep them for longer.

Though in the Milner house, we don’t have leftover cookies, they are gone as fast as the time machine in Back To The Future.

Notes

Swaps. We made our smartie cookies with regular sized smarties and crushed the majority. You can do the same or use smaller or giant smarties. You can also use different colour combinations.
Size. Our air fryer will only hold 4 giant cookies, yours might hold more or less. Do them in batches until they are all done.
