Air Fryer Beets
After sharing with you last week how to dehydrate beets using the air fryer, I wanted to also share with you my favourite beets recipe.
This originally happened a couple of years ago on a whim.
I had some leftover beetroot left from another recipe that I was experimenting with and loaded my leftover beetroot into the air fryer.
It was chopped into little chunks and tossed in seasoning and extra virgin olive oil.
The cubed air fryer beets were delicious, and it had me experimenting more and more with beetroot (as us Brits call it) in the air fryer.
After recent requests for air fryer roasted beets, I thought it was time I shared with you how it is done and then you can cook beets in your air fryer at home.
Plus, as well as our free newsletter, we also have a free air fryer mini course. It is ideal for air fryer beginners or those that want to get more confident with their air fryer. The free course runs for 5 days with a new lesson delivered each day to your inbox.
Can You Roast Beets In An Air Fryer?
Yes, you can. The air fryer is fantastic for cooking a range of foods that you would normally roast in the oven.
Such as chicken, potatoes and various vegetables including beets.
Best of all, when you roast beets in the air fryer, you need a lot LESS oil, making them a lot lower in calories.
Do You Have To Peel Beets Before Roasting?
This is personal choice and there is no right or wrong answer. From personal experience, I find it is down to the size of the beets that you are cooking in the air fryer.
For example, when I am making potatoes in the air fryer, I prefer the skin on when making air fryer potato wedges or air fryer cajun fries. But when potatoes are chopped into cubes, I much prefer skin off.
With air fryer beets I have found that the smaller the beet, the more I prefer the skin off. Yet if you are air frying large roasted beets you may prefer the skin on option.
Cooking Beets In An Air Fryer
There are a few different ways that you can enjoy cooking beets in the air fryer. I recommend you compare it to the potato and have it as a healthier version of the humble spud.
Here are three ways that I love to cook beets in the air fryer for a quick side dish:
Air Fryer Beet Fries โ Just like with a potato you can chop your beetroot into fries. You can also toss your beet fries in the same seasonings you would for fries. Then air fry them for a similar cook time.
Air Fryer Beet Wedges โ Make your beetroot into the shape of potato wedges, toss in seasoning and extra virgin olive oil and then air fry. You will love how delicious they are, and it will become a new favourite food.
Air Fryer Beetroot Cubes โ This is perfect for some leftover beetroot or if you want something different for your breakfast hash. Simply peel and dice your beetroot into 1cm cubes and then toss in extra virgin olive oil and seasoning. Because its smaller you can reduce the cook time by about 20%.
Air Fried Beets Ingredients
Beetroot โ Any fresh beets will do the trick. I will often place them into the fridge first, that way its easier to peel them when they are chilled.
Oil โ Its essential to have some extra virgin olive oil or something similar like avocado oil on your beets. You toss the beets in a small quantity of oil and it helps the beets get crispy and stop them from drying out.
Seasoning โ You can mix and match seasonings so that your side dish goes well with your mains. Or keep it simple with salt and pepper.
Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this beets air fryer recipe, it has just been our Philips Air Fryer. We have this one and its wonderful for air fryer vegetables, as well as for other air fryer classics.
How To Cook Beets In Air Fryer?
- Slice. Peel and slice your beetroot into either wedges, fries, or cubes.
- Season. Load your beetroot into a mixing bowl with salt, pepper, and extra virgin olive oil. Toss with your hands to make sure the beets are well coated.
- Air Fry. Load the beetroot into the air fryer and cook until you have perfectly cooked crispy beetroot. Which takes approximately 25 minutes for wedges and between 18 to 20 minutes for fries or cubes.
Temp To Roast Beets?
I recommend that you start with a temperature of 180c/360f for roasted beets. Then for the last 5 minutes of cooking increase the temperature to 200c/400f. This will ensure you get an incredible crisp on your beets.
