Air Fryer Doughnut Holes

The air fryer doughnut story continues today with air fryer doughnut holes.

It is the 3rd part of our 4th part doughnut series. We have already shown you how to make bread machine doughnut dough, yesterday it was an update of our air fryer doughnuts from scratch and today we are taking about air fryer doughnut holes.

In my teens, I worked for some lovely Filipino ladies at a doughnut counter with some of my friends.

We served the local tourists doughnuts, fair grub as well as ice cream from between 10am and 7pm during the summer season.

It was great fun and almost put me off doughnuts for life.

They were incredibly greasy, then when left where soggy and rather awful.

The Filipino ladies decided that us teen girls didn’t eat enough and would make us sit down and eat one.

Me and my friends have barely eaten doughnuts since, in fact, it put us right off them.

But air fryer doughnuts are different. They are not shallow fried and have a wonderful crisp to them.

Yesterday after sharing with you how to make air fryer doughnuts, we wanted to dedicate today to the baby doughnut, aka the doughnut holes.

Well worth making in the air fryer, doughnut holes are much quicker to cook, easier and taste JUST as good.

Can You Air Fry Doughnut Holes?

Yes you can! Doughnut holes in the air fryer are so hands free. You don’t need to be delicate with them as they are just beautiful dough balls.

You load them into the air fryer as anaemic looking dough, and they come out as golden doughnut holes.

Do You Call Them Air Fryer Doughnut Holes?

I love how in different cultures that we call things different things. I grew up in England and it was amazing how you could travel just 90 minutes and a sandwich would have a totally different name.

A doughnut hole you might know as:

  • Air Fryer Mini Doughnuts
  • Air Fryer Doughnut Balls
  • Air Fryer Doughnut Bites

You might also call them donuts rather than doughnuts. Personally, I prefer the name air fryer doughnut bites because to me that is what best describes them.

Instead of being a traditional big doughnut with a hole in the middle they are like heavenly bites.

You can also make them smaller if you like or go with a medium size.

Air Fryer Yeast Doughnut Holes

Because you are making air fryer yeast doughnut holes, you can get more holes out of each batch.

I left mine for another 30 minutes prior to air frying and even though the dough was already done, they still doubled in size.

If you want your doughnut holes to be small, I recommend going the size of a meatball when rolling them ready for the air fryer.

How To Air Fry Doughnut Holes?

air fryer doughnut holes step by step

The quick version of cooking air fryer doughnut holes goes as follows:

  1. Roll out just made air fryer doughnut dough.
  2. Use cutters to quickly prep.
  3. Make into balls or keep to the cutter shape.
  4. Load into the air fryer.
  5. Air fry + make glaze.
  6. Cover in doughnut glaze and eat.

There is a little more to it than that, but those are the simple basics!

How Long To Air Fry Doughnut Holes?

The recommended air fryer doughnut holes cook time is JUST 6 minutes at 180c/360f. However, note that these doughnut holes were medium/large.

If your air fryer doughnut holes are smaller reduce the cook time to 5 minutes.

Air Fryer Glazed Doughnut Holes

With doughnut holes I like a wet sticky glaze, rather than thick one. I recommend the following:

  • Mix in a bowl 240ml/1 cup of icing sugar with 5Tbsp of whole milk. Mix well with a teaspoon of vanilla essence until you have a thin glaze.
  • Add your favourite food colouring – we went with green.
  • When your air fryer doughnut holes are done, toss in the bowl of doughnut glaze.

Notes

Batching. You can use the leftovers from making a batch of air fryer doughnuts or make a bread maker batch just for doughnut holes. What we did was two batches of dough and used one for doughnuts and one for doughnut holes.
No Glaze. If you don’t want a doughnut glaze then I recommend sprinkling the doughnuts with icing sugar.
Bigger. If your doughnuts are smaller reduce the cook time from 6 minutes to 5 minutes. We did two batches one lot was the size of a smaller dinner roll and the others were the size of meatballs.
