Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Burger. Cooked to perfection in the air fryer. Incredibly tender chicken, never dry, with a spicy sauce that even your spice hater family members will love.
Cooked in the air fryer and perfect for a mid-week chicken burger meal without having to pay for fast food.
Wendy’s spicy chicken burger is perfect, if you have a few leftovers in the fridge and want some yummy burgers for dinner then this is a dream come true.
Mainly because in our house it includes ingredients that we always have in.
The inspiration for these spicy chicken burgers take me back several years to when I was in the US.
We were out travelling on a holiday of a lifetime. It was long before Sofia & Jorge were conceived, and Kyle was just 10 years old at the time.
We had 10 days staying at Disney World, 11 days staying at Universal Studios, 3 days in total in Boston and 10 days staying with my aunt and uncle in Vermont.
Though by the time we had got to Vermont we were exhausted. All those days out in the heat and humidity of Florida had taken its toll.
Plus, we were huge back then and my BMI was at 35. That meant that all this exercise had been too much for me and arriving in Vermont I just wanted to eat loads of Ben & Jerry’s and sleep a lot.
My aunt was at work during the day and we spent lots of time with my uncle. He was an amazing guy and was like that Grandad of your dreams.
He was rather deaf, so a lot of conversations involved SHOUTING. But he was truly remarkable and so much fun to be around.
He took us to the Ben & Jerrys factory where we sampled the new flavour and had a museum tour.
The museum tour itself was super boring but we got rewarded at the end with free ice cream, so it was well worth it. Plus, I hate the fact that here in Portugal, the Ben & Jerry’s flavours you get are so limited. So, let’s just say I was like the cat that got the cream!
One other place he took us to was Wendy’s. We had never heard of it before and he said it was the best chicken burger he had ever tried. He said forget the rubbish at McDonalds these are like homemade real burgers.
We each sat down and had a Wendy’s Chicken Burger and fell in love with this amazing burger.
We ate in silence and thought this was the most AMAZING thing since sliced bread. Dominic still talks about it now and wishes that Wendy’s would come to Portugal.
That was in the summer of 2012 and was an amazing summer.
Sadly, my uncle passed away last year and is very much missed and will never be forgotten.

Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Burgers In The Air Fryer
You’re probably wondering what the secrets are behind making your own version of Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Burgers in the Air Fryer and keeping the calories down and the costs too?
Well my secret ingredient is tinned tomatoes.
They make a delicious base for the hot pepper sauce that we use in Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Burgers. Of course, you could buy a hot pepper sauce instead, but it only takes a few minutes to make your own.
What Spices Are In Wendy’s Spicy Chicken?
Good news! The spice blend to make Wendy’s Spicy chicken are all things that nearly all of us have in our pantry cupboard at any particular time.
I didn’t have to buy anything in at all, to be able to make these spicy chicken burgers!
The Wendy’s Spice Blend includes:
- Cayenne Pepper
- Onion Powder
- Garlic Powder
- Paprika
- Salt & Pepper
That is it! When you compare this to how many seasonings you have in a KFC blend this is easy street!
Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Wrap
If you would rather have Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Wrap INSTEAD of the classic spicy chicken burgers, then swap the burger bun for one of our homemade tortilla wraps instead.
They taste amazing and then load them up with extra mayonnaise and OMG you will want to eat them all the time.
Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Burgers In The Air Fryer
Ingredients
- Air Fryer
- Air Fryer Grill Pan
- 2 Large Chicken Breasts
- 2 Tsp Paprika
- Salt & Pepper
Flour Coating:
- 200 g Plain Flour
- ½ Tsp Cayenne Pepper
- 1 Tbsp Onion Powder
- 1 Tbsp Garlic Powder
- 1 Tbsp Paprika
- 1 Tsp Basil
Hot Pepper Sauce:
- 1 Can Tinned Tomatoes
- 1 Tsp Cayenne Pepper
- 1 Tsp Garlic Powder
- 1 Tbsp Paprika
- Handful Black Peppercorns
Instructions
- Place all your hot pepper sauce ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Place it into a large bowl.
- In another bowl add your flour and add the spicy flour ingredients. Mix with a fork until the flour has a glow to it from the seasonings.
- Butterfly the chicken breasts so that your 2 chicken breasts become 4 pieces.
- Season the top of the butterflied chicken with salt, pepper and paprika.
- Place the chicken into the flour bowl, then into the hot pepper sauce bowl, then back in the flour. Make sure with each coating that you make sure the chicken is drowning in it.
- Place in the air fryer grill pan and attach to the air fryer and cook for 10 minutes at 180c/360f.
- Serve inside burger buns with salad garnish and mayonnaise.
