Dehydrated Pineapple

If you have followed my air fryer pineapple recipe, you will know that I love cooking pineapple in the air fryer.

I love how juicy the pineapple is, how you can cook the pineapple in cinnamon and how you don’t need extra sugar to make air fried pineapple taste amazing.

But what if we put the pineapple back in the air fryer and instead made a dehydrated pineapple recipe instead.

We would use pineapple slices, both with rings and without and see what all the fuss what about with dried pineapple.

We could then compare and see if rings or no pineapple rings worked best.

Well, we did exactly that and today are the results of our air fryer dehydrated pineapple.

Can You Dehydrate Pineapple?

Yes, you can. Pineapple is delicious when it is dehydrated. You can chop up a whole pineapple into rings or whole slices and then place into a dehydrator.

Or if you have an oven with temperatures as low as 55c or 130f then you can do the oven method, though our favourite choice is to use the air fryer dehydrator setting when dehydrating pineapple.

How To Preserve Pineapple?

In my opinion, the best way to preserve pineapple and how to make pineapple last longer is to dehydrate it.

You cut your pineapple into slices and cook your pineapple at a low temperature to dry it out. You can then store your pineapple slices for a lot longer than you would normally do so.

Plus, it makes a fantastic make ahead snack for both kids and adults alike.

Dried Pineapple

You probably want to know, why dried pineapple? And what is dried pineapple like?

Well, dried pineapple rings, or dehydrated pineapple rings, are like a typical dried snack. They taste sweet yet no extra sugar has been added and the texture is like dried raisins.

Some dried fruits can be tough and chewy and feel like you are breaking your teeth. Yet when you bite into dried pineapple rings, you will be amazed by how good the texture is.

What You Need For Dehydrated Pineapple:

Dehydrated Pineapple

Air Fryer OvenI recommend this air fryer oven for dehydrating fruit and it is fantastic because there are three shelves, and you can do a small batch or a large batch of dehydrated pineapple. Though we did half a pineapple and it covered two shelves of the air fryer oven.

Storage – You need a plan of action of where you plan to keep your dried fruit. You can keep it simple by eating them all straight away (yes I do that), use a zip loc bag (I prefer this one) or you can opt for traditional pantry containers (like this one).

Pineapple – I prefer to use fresh pineapple over frozen, but you can use either. For me this pineapple recipe is all about preserving the life of the summer fruit and if they are already frozen you don’t need to do this.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil – I recommend that you spray the pineapple slices with extra virgin olive oil prior to adding the cinnamon. This will help the cinnamon stick to the pineapple and stop the pineapple from turning into cardboard texture once it is dried.

Cinnamon – I love to sprinkle cinnamon over my pineapple. If you give it a sprinkle throughout the pineapple slices, then it will taste fantastic once dehydrated and will not taste overpowering.

That is, it! You probably think that are complicated ingredients and accessories to make air fryer dehydrated pineapple, but there isn’t. It is also a fantastic easy recipe for air fryer beginners.

Preparing A Pineapple For Dehydrating

The process of preparing your pineapple is an easy one and its all about getting the slices right before it goes into the air fryer.

Start by trimming the top and the top off the pineapple like this:

Then peel the pineapple and slowly slice it into pineapple slices making sure your knife is secure:

Then when you have finished your slicing place the pineapple slices onto your chopping board.

Now for the cool pineapple slicing hack!

If you want pineapple rings you will need a small cookie cutter that you use for doughnuts and then place it over the centre of your pineapple like this:

Then press down and remove the centre and you have pineapple rings.

You can also choose to cut the centre or leave it whole. I tried both and found both types were delicious and didn’t have a favourite. Think of it as personal choice.

Then the last part of preparing your pineapple for dehydrating is to place the pineapple slices onto your air fryer tray and spray with extra virgin olive oil and then sprinkle with cinnamon.

Your pineapple slices are now prepared and ready for the air fryer oven.

  • Prep. Cut the ends off your pineapple, peel the pineapple, and cut into slices. If you want pineapple rings use a cookie cutter to remove the centre to create rings.
  • Season. Place your pineapple on your shelves and spray your pineapple rings with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with cinnamon.
  • Air fry. Load your shelf (or shelves) of pineapple slices into the air fryer oven and air fry for 5 hours on 55c/130f.
  • Store. Remove from the air fryer and allow to cool before placing into your preferred storage container.

How Long To Dehydrate Pineapple?

The recommended cook time for dehydrated pineapple is 5 hours. I checked on my pineapple several times and tried different cook times but found that 5 hours produced the best results.

The same applied regardless of creating rings with your pineapple slices or leaving them hole free.

How Long Does Pineapple Last?

This depends on where you have stored them. Dried pineapple can last a year if they are sealed in a mason jar in a dark cool pantry.

However, if you are storing your dehydrated pineapple in a zip loc bag in a warm house, then expect them to last up to three months.

What Can You Dehydrate?

There are lots of food you can dehydrate and its not just about pineapple. In fact, this recipe is number #4 in a summer weekly theme we are running of fruit to dehydrate. Last week it was dehydrated raspberries, the week before it was dehydrated blueberries, the week before it was dehydrated strawberries and we can’t wait to carry on the theme.

As well as these you can also dehydrate most fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. There is also the option to dehydrate other foods such as marshmallows, potatoes and beef jerky. Though, those are the dehydrated foods I think of first as there is so much choice.

I recommend that if you are a beginner to dehydrated foods that you start with dehydrated fruit recipes from the berry family.

Notes

Tip. I recommend that halfway through the cook time that you turn your pineapple over and add a coating of extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkle of cinnamon to the other side.
Setting. Note that the air fryer oven has a weird set up. You have to press fruit and then adjust the time up to 55c and then adjust the cook time.
Quantities. Note that because of the size of my air fryer and how much dried pineapple I wanted, I only dried half a pineapple. You can take it up a level and do lots of batches but note half a pineapple is the ideal size for filling the air fryer oven.
