This beer bread recipe is our last in our current bread machine. We have had our bread machine for years. Though it is on its last legs and we plan to upgrade after moving house.
It has brought us so many great bread recipes and we wanted our last to be something amazing.
With Oktoberfest being just around the corner, we felt that if we were going to make one last bread machine recipe for you, then it had to be a simple beer bread recipe.
One that you can recreate at home and that you can make variations to with your favourite toppings and flavours.
Then of course, serve it with our beer cheese soup for the ultimate Oktoberfest of your own.
What Is Beer Bread?
Beer bread is homemade bread that you have made with typical bread ingredients, but you have also used beer.
The beer gives a fantastic flavour to your homemade bread, and it also rises more than classic bread because you have yeast in the beer and are also using yeast separately.
This is great news because it produces a bigger loaf of beer bread.
What Does Beer Bread Taste Like?
Beer bread is a little richer compared to other breads and has a subtle flavour of beer as you bite into it.
But if you don’t normally like beer, then no worries, because it is not strong like drinking a pint of beer and is fine for serving to kids.
Is Beer Bread Healthy?
No, it isn’t. Beer bread ingredients include flour, beer, and sugar. Three ingredients that I would never consider to be healthy.
If you wanted to make your beer bread healthier, then you could choose honey instead of sugar and look at using a healthier flour.
For example, you could make a wholewheat beer bread with wholewheat flour.
Beer Bread With All Purpose Flour
You can also make this beer bread recipe with cheap flour such as all purpose, or as us Brits call it, plain flour.
But it will taste much better if you use a quality flour.
You will also be pleased to know, that this beer bread is made without self raising flour as the double yeast is used to help it rise.

When making bread with beer, the best beer is the German kind. I have been to Germany many times and tried many different beers, and nothing beats theirs.
We picked up a fantastic German beer from our local supermarket and used that.
Beer Bread Variations
My favourite way to make beer bread is with cheese.
It’s a simple concept of adding grated cheddar cheese to your bread, towards the end of the bread machine cook time.

Jalapeno Cheese Beer Bread – When the bread machine is still mixing the dough, just before it stops and starts cooking, add in thinly sliced jalapenos.
Rosemary Beer Bread – When you add the dry ingredients add a tablespoon of dried rosemary. It will give your beer bread a lovely flavour.
Italian Beer Bread – Instead of rosemary, swap it for Italian seasoning and make your own Italian beer bread. I also love to shred some fresh oregano and add that in too. You can also add dried garlic powder too.
Quick Beer Bread Ingredients
Beer – We recommend a good quality German beer. When you make beer bread, the beer becomes the star of the bread and a cheap beer, will give you a bland beer bread.
Dough – We are using similar ingredients that we use in many of our bread machine recipes including yeast, flour, sugar, extra virgin olive oil, milk and salt. These will make your bread dough and then you are just adding in extra ingredients to transform it into the best ever beer bread.
Mustard – Authentic beer bread will also feature mustard. Mustard adds a wonderful flavour to your bread and the mustard combined with the beer is the winning ingredients.
Cheese – If you want to transform your beer bread into amazing cheese beer bread, then you will want a sprinkle of grated cheddar cheese going over the bread loaf towards the end of cooking.

How To Make Beer Bread?
- Prep. Load your wet ingredients first into the bread machine, adding the beer first. Then add the dry ingredients on top.
- Cook. Place the lid on the bread machine and set it to the quick bread setting which is usually for 90 minutes.
- Add. When the bread is 30 minutes from finishing sprinkle the top of the loaf with grated cheese, rosemary, Italian herbs or any other add in crusts you are doing.
