When I was making our air fryer apple chips recipe and updating for you, I also had some spare pears in the fruit bowl and after apple went in pears.

Both ourselves and the kids commented about how delicious the dehydrated pears were and said that we must start dehydrating pears on a regular basis.

We also love to mix and match and dehydrate apples at the same time as pears. Which is perfect for when you have apples and pears in your fruit bowl that need using up.

That was a long time ago, and since then we have dehydrated a lot of different fruits using our air fryer oven and it feels amazing to finally be sharing with you today our simple go to recipe for air fryer pear chips.

Can An Air Fryer Be Used As A Dehydrator?

Yes, it can. Though nowadays, with the air fryer becoming more and more popular, many air fryers now have a dehydrator setting.

Especially the air fryer ovens. For example, in our air fryer dehydrated pears recipe we are using this air fryer.

If you have an air fryer without a dehydrator setting, it will also work, but the air fryer must be able to go down to a low temperature of 55c/130f.

Can You Air Fry Banana Chips?

Yes, you can. I often refer to them as my air fryer oven banana chips because the brand of air fryer oven I have has a dehydrate setting.

It’s the Power Air Fryer Oven and it makes amazing air fryer banana chips and is the same banana chips recipe I am sharing with you today.

But if you don’t have the Power Air Fryer Oven, note that any air fryer with a dehydrate function or an air fryer that will go as low as 55c/130f is perfect for air fried banana chips.

Do Pears Dehydrate Well?

Yes, they do. Just like apples, raspberries, oranges, limes and bananas, pears are another member of the fruit family that should be on your bucket list for dehydrating.

They come out just as good as when you buy pear chips from the supermarket, but you know exactly what ingredients are included, and you are saving money too.

Are Dehydrated Pears Good For You?

Yes, they do. Just like many fruits, they are amazing for a healthy balanced diet and are also low in calories.

If you are trying to lose weight, this dehydrated pears recipe can be a plan B for your usual unhealthy evening snacks.

Are Dehydrated Pears Sliced Or Cut In Half?

You can have your pears either sliced or cut in half. But for traditional air fryer pear chips, they are thinly sliced like potato chips. Plus, when pears are sliced rather than cut in half, they are quicker to dehydrate in your air fryer.

Dehydrating Pears

Air Fryer OvenI recommend this air fryer oven for dehydrating fruit, and it is fantastic because there are three shelves, and you can do a small batch or a large batch of dehydrated pears.

Storage – You need a plan of action of where you plan to keep your dried fruit. You can keep it simple by eating them all straight away (yes I do that), use a zip loc bag (I prefer this one) or you can opt for traditional pantry containers (like this one).

Pears – If you are wondering what the best pears for dehydrating are, then the answer is simple, as any will do. Of course, if they are over soft, it makes them very difficult for slicing and you can cut yourself with a mandolin. Therefore, I recommend pears that are too hard to bite into, rather than super juicy pears.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil – I recommend that you spray your dried pears with extra virgin olive oil prior to adding your cinnamon. This helps the cinnamon stick to the fruit but also prevents them from going hard when they are dried. As there is nothing worse than hard as nails pear chips.

Cinnamon – I love my dried pears with cinnamon. It gives a wonderful flavour to the pear slices as they dry. You just give the pear slices a sprinkle with cinnamon as you place them in the air fryer.

That is, it! You probably think that are complicated ingredients and accessories to make air fryer pears, but there isn’t. It is also a fantastic easy recipe for air fryer beginners.

How To Prepare Pears For Dehydrating?

The most important thing is how to cut pears for dehydrating. Take a look at this picture:

Dehydrating Pears in air fryer

You don’t want pear slices like this for dehydrating. Instead, you want to slice off the end first and then start slicing for the dried pears.

For example, start slicing once your pear is at this thickness:

Then you can focus on a consistent slice of pear and then all your pears in the air fryer will have a universal size and cook equally without some pear slices being undercooked and some being overcooked.

  • Prep. Slice your pears into similar size slices. We recommend a professional slicer (like this one) for this and other dehydrated fruit as it can give an even cut.
  • Add. Load your pear slices onto your air fryer shelves and spray with extra virgin olive oil and then sprinkle with cinnamon.
  • Air fry. Load your shelf (or shelves) of pears into the air fryer oven and air fry for 4 hours on 55c/130f.
  • Store. Remove from the air fryer and allow to cool before placing into your preferred storage container.

How Long To Dehydrate Pears?

You will love the fact that air fryer pears take JUST 4 hours to cook. That is from loading them into the air fryer oven, until they are perfect dried pears and ready to eat or store for later.

I do recommend swapping the shelves around after 2 hours so that those on the bottom shelf get an even dehydrate.

Or if you are doing a small batch, you can keep all the pear chips on the top shelf.

What Temperature To Dehydrate Pears?

I recommend a temperature of 55c/130f for dehydrating pears in the air fryer. I have found that this is the golden temperature for a lot of different dried fruits in the air fryer. Plus, because it’s a medium temperature for air fryer dehydrating it speeds up the time.

How To Store Dehydrated Pears?

The best place to store dehydrated pears is sealed in a mason jar in a dark cool pantry. That is because they will have a longer shelf life and can least at least a year.

However, if you are storing your dehydrated pears in a zip loc bag in a warm house, then expect them to last up to three months.

What Can You Dehydrate?

There are lots of food you can dehydrate and its not just about pears. In fact, this recipe is number #6 in a summer theme we are running of fruit to dehydrate in the air fryer. Last week it was dehydrated bananas, the week before it was dehydrated pineapple, and we can’t wait to carry on the theme.

As well as these you can also dehydrate most fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. There is also the option to dehydrate other foods such as marshmallows, potatoes, and beef jerky. Though, those are the dehydrated foods I think of first as there is so much choice.

I recommend that if you are a beginner to dehydrated foods that you start with dehydrated fruit recipes from the berry family.

Notes

Setting. Note that the Power Air Fryer Oven has a weird set up. You have to press fruit and then adjust the time up to 55c and then adjust the cook time.
Swap. I recommend if doing a big batch of dried pears, that you swap the shelves around halfway through the cook time. This will ensure that the bottom shelf are dehydrated properly and not just the top shelf.

I had to try this as i was curious what they would be like. They turned out to be a great snack, my children looked at them suspiciously but gave them a try and actually liked them, so a new way to give them some fruit, thank you.
