Dehydrated Blueberries

Calling all blueberry fans, this is going to be your new go to blueberry recipe. It will be joining instant pot blueberry jam and air fryer blueberry jam tarts.

But unlike the jam tarts and the homemade jam, it is much healthier and perfect for snacking on when blueberry season is long gone.

You can look back in the winter and be proud of yourself that you took advantage of in season blueberries and made yourself this amazing healthy treat at the right time.

I love blueberries so much that go to my freezer and you will find frozen jam tarts and a huge stash of frozen blueberries.

Those frozen blueberries are then used for smoothies, breakfast muffins and for any time when I am craving some berries.

But today, I have your plan B. An alternative to frozen blueberries for preserving blueberries during the off season and turning them into something amazing.

Can You Dehydrate Blueberries?

Yes, you can. Blueberries are one of the easiest fruits for dehydrating and require very little effort.

You can also dehydrate frozen blueberries following the exact same method.

Are Dried Blueberries Good For You?

Yes, they are. Blueberries are a fantastic low calorie fruit to add to your daily diet. You can also use them as a replacement for dried nuts or dried raisins.

They are also fantastic to add to your breakfast in the morning.

What To Do With Dried Blueberries?

I recommend baking with dried blueberries the most. You might be wondering why, well, the texture of dried blueberries is the exact same as raisins.

In fact, close your eyes and have dried blueberries in one hand and dried raisins in the other and you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference on touch.

Then think of all those great recipes with raisins and replace the raisins with your dried blueberries. Perfect for if you have a fussy family member that doesn’t like raisins, but you want to make bread and butter pudding.

What You Need For Dried Blueberries:

Air Fryer OvenI recommend this air fryer oven for dehydrating fruit and it is fantastic because there are three shelves, and you can do a small batch or a large batch of unsweetened dried blueberries.

Storage – You need a plan of action of where you plan to keep your diy dried blueberries. You can keep it simple by eating them all straight away (yes I do that), use a zip loc bag (I prefer this one) or you can opt for traditional pantry containers (like this one).

Blueberries – I prefer to use fresh blueberries over frozen, but you can use either. For me this dried blueberries recipe is all about preserving the life of the blueberries and if they are already frozen you don’t need to do this.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil – I recommend that you spray your blueberries with extra virgin olive oil prior to adding your stevia. This helps the stevia stick to the blueberries but also prevents them from going hard when they are dried.

Stevia – I love my dried blueberries with stevia. It gives a wonderful sweet flavour to the blueberries as they dry. You just give the blueberries a sprinkle with stevia as you place them in the air fryer.

That is, it! You probably think that are complicated ingredients and accessories to make air fryer blueberries, but there isn’t. Making this dehydrated blueberries recipe ideal for air fryer beginners.

How To Prepare Dried Blueberries For Dehydrating?

Dehydrated Blueberries

The process of preparing your fresh blueberries is an easy one.

Simply give your blueberries a rinse under a cold tap to give them a clean, pat them dry and remove any bad ones.

I always find that I lose at least 6 blueberries that have gone bad, but still get a good amount of dried blueberries.

Then place your blueberries onto your air fryer oven shelf, spray with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with stevia.

Your berries are now prepared and ready for the air fryer oven.

How To Dry Blueberries?

  • Prep. Wash your blueberries and get rid of any bad ones. Pat dry with kitchen towel and then place onto your shelf. Spray with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with stevia.
  • Air fry. Load your shelf (or shelves) of blueberries into the air fryer oven and air fry for 10 hours on 55c/130f.
  • Store. Remove from the air fryer and allow to cool before placing into your preferred storage container.

How Long To Dehydrate Blueberries?

The recommended cook time for dehydrated blueberries is 10 hours. I checked on my blueberries several times and tried different cook times but found that 10 hours produced the best results.

You’re welcome to keep checking on your blueberries and see if they need a longer, or a shorter cook time. As I know many recommend 12 hours, but I felt 10 hours was perfect.

How To Store Dried Blueberries?

This depends on where you have stored them. Dried blueberries can last a year if they are sealed in a mason jar in a dark cool pantry.

However, if you are storing your dehydrated blueberries in a zip loc bag in a warm house, then expect them to last up to three months.

What Can You Dehydrate?

There are lots of food you can dehydrate and its not just about blueberries. In fact, this recipe is number #2 in a summer theme we are running of fruit to dehydrate. Last week it was dehydrated strawberries and we can’t wait to carry on the theme.

As well as these you can also dehydrate most fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. There is also the option to dehydrate other foods such as marshmallows, potatoes and beef jerky. Though, those are the dehydrated foods I think of first as there is so much choice.

I recommend that if you are a beginner to dehydrated foods that you start with dehydrated fruit recipes from the berry family.

Notes

Setting. Note that the air fryer oven has a weird set up. You have to press fruit and then adjust the time up to 55c and then adjust the cook time.
Wobbles. I find that as you load your blueberries shelf into your air fryer oven that some of the blueberries fall off and into the bottom of the air fryer oven. Simply put them back on the shelf and carry on as usual.
