Mango Avocado Smoothie

Welcome to my Mango Avocado Smoothie in the blender. Updated for the summer of 2020 after originally sharing it with you back in 2016 and a favourite in the Milner house for both the kids and the adults.

I read an interesting debate on a mother and baby Facebook group recently. The mum was saying what a rubbish mum she felt like because her kid was nearly 3 years old and she felt like she had not introduced enough food to her baby.

That she felt like it was her fault that her baby just wanted to breast feed or eat soup and that she wanted advice moving him onto solids.

At first, I thought the replies would be judgemental, but they were not. You see she had struck a nerve, so many other mums felt the same way, but were too embarrassed to come forward about it.

A lot of it of course comes down to fussy kids. And the effort we go through to get our kids interested in different types of food, to prevent them from being fussy eaters.

With Jorge I have never had this problem because he has always watched me cooking and never stops wanting to try everything. But Sofia has always been a little bit fussy.

Babies are hard work when it comes to introducing food and unfortunately, it’s a case of sucking it up and looking forward to the time when you have found them a handful of food that they like.

Sofia for example would eat loads of soup with no problems at all. This meant that when we were eating out, we would simply order her a soup from the menu with some bread.

Then it saved the hassle of bringing a meal out for her and having to keep it at the correct temperature.

Even now at almost six, she eats well at home but doesn’t when we go out. I just let her share what I am eating. Then Dominic does the same with Jorge.

My focus though during the weaning phase of both Sofia and Jorge was to introduce them to smoothies such as this mango avocado smoothie.

It is an alternative to soup and gets them used to different flavours of food and an opportunity for them to develop favourite foods.

This is what started Sofia off with her obsession with avocados. She adores them and demands them all the time, even when they are out of season. Whilst Jorge only wants to eat avocados when they are in a smoothie like this.

We have a lady that sells fresh fruit and vegetables at the side of the road, adjacent to the restaurant her grown up kids own.

She always has an excellent supply of fresh avocados asking to be blended and made into smoothies or sliced and served with some chicken breast.

I also love these healthy smoothies in the blender and often I will make enough for the 3 of us to enjoy on a warm summer’s day.

Can I Give My Baby Smoothies?

Absolutely! But consider age and what ingredients you plan to add to them first. Here are a few pointers that my dietician recommended when Sofia was a baby:

  • Wait until your baby is six months old.
  • Stick to dairy free ingredients such as fresh fruit and coconut milk.
  • Introduce one fruit at a time i.e. do the avocado layer one week and the mango layer the week after, then combine if your baby likes them.
  • Load into a plastic baby bottle or into a toddler cup so that they can feed themselves.

Though for me this advice is just common sense, as you know your baby the best and when they are getting bored of water in between milk and what you think they would like.

I remember when Jorge was a baby, he seemed to have some allergies, so I kept him vegan until he was about 18 months old.

Well until he started stealing Sofia’s chicken breast when she wasn’t looking!

1 Year Old Baby Milkshake

I call this mango avocado smoothie my 1 year old baby milkshake. It gets very hot in the summer in Portugal and I can take this down to the beach with the kids as a refreshing summer drink for them.

I will fill it with extra ice cubes that will have melted by the time they have it, and it will help keep it cooler. Plus, it makes their summer drinks more interesting and less boring.

You can also split it up and when it is hot, just make them a mango smoothie into their drink cup.

How To Make Mango Avocado Smoothies?

You’re probably thinking, that making two layers must be overly complicated, but it isn’t.

Both layers have the same base ingredients and you make the base first, split the mixture into two and then make your separate mango and avocado layers.

Load the ingredients into the blender:

Blend the ingredients and pour half into a spare bowl or container. You now have the base for your smoothie.

  • Next blend what is left in the blender with avocado and pour into your smoothie glass or baby cup.
  • Next quickly rinse the blender to remove the green avocado leftovers.
  • Load the rest of the base back into the blender, add fresh mango, blend and then pour.
  • You now have a delicious mango avocado smoothie.

Mango Smoothie Popsicles

You probably thought that was it, but I am not done yet, because mango smoothie popsicles are just as delicious, and babies and toddlers love these too.

They are also rather soothing making these mango smoothie popsicles PERFECT for when your babies are teething, or the summer heat is getting to them and you want to offer something healthy that is refreshing.

To make mango smoothies into popsicle lollies is SIMPLE.

Instead of pouring your mango mixture into drink cups, instead you pour them into moulds.

If your kids are older then let them choose which moulds, they want to use. For example, my kids love their Mickey Mouse ones. You can also freeze ice cubes too if that is your thing.

Here are Sofia & Jorge with their mango popsicles:

Another suggestion is to make slightly more mango than you need, then the leftovers can be made into smoothies like we have done.
