Onion Bhaji
Just the mention of the words “onion bhaji” and I am there with bells on. I have loved crispy onion bhajis since I was a kid.
I remember meals out to the Indian restaurant with my parents (probably from the age of eight and onwards) and I would be boring and always have the same thing.
Onion bhaji for starter, butter chicken with chips or rice and some naan bread. It was delicious every time and I always got excited over tucking into some Indian food.
Fast forward to age 16 and I had a part time evening job working in an Indian Takeaway. To my delight they would deep fry onion bhajis for me to snack on all evening. Talk about being in food heaven!
But marrying someone that hates Indian food means that it is something that is very rare.
But I can grab some Iceland Onion Bhajis and cook them from frozen in the air fryer.
Then because they come in a pack of 32 and I can’t eat that many, I can reheat onion bhajis whenever I want.

What Are Onion Bhajis?
I am sure some of you will be reading this and gather from what I have said that I love onion bhajis.
You will have also ready that it’s an Indian food, but you might not know anything else beyond this.
Well in a nutshell, a bhaji is a small piece of finger food that comes from India. It is traditionally made of onion fried in batter with lots of yummy Indian spices.
Are Onion Bhajis High In Carbs?
Yes they are. Ingredients in onion bhajis include plain flour, which is bad news if you are on a low carb diet.
Though it is great for a calorie counting diet because you can reduce your calories of your onion bhajis by air frying rather than deep frying.
Can You Cook Onion Bhajis From Frozen?
Yes you can. You can use your previously cooked onion bhajis that you have loaded into the freezer, you can use shop bought such as the ones sold at Iceland or Morrisons.
Can You Eat Onion Bhajis Cold?
Yes, you can eat cold onion bhajis but only if they are already cooked. I have done this occasionally but find that they are much nicer if you reheat them instead.
You can then use the air fryer to reheat your leftover onion bhajis.
Can You Freeze Takeaway Onion Bhajis?
Yes, you can freeze your leftover takeaway onion bhajis and I love to do this. Then I have a good batch of them in the freezer, then when I next make a curry, I can do a quick reheat.
And in answer to your next question, you can also reheat your frozen precooked onion bhajis in the air fryer too.
Iceland Frozen Onion Bhajis
Frozen – You will need your Iceland frozen onion bhajis. You can cook all 32 onion bhajis at once because they are small or do a smaller amount if you prefer.
Spray – I also recommend a spray bottle filled with extra virgin olive oil. Don’t use frylight or pam because it ruins the air fryer.
Sauce – Are you the one that likes something to dunk into their frozen bhajis? I am and love mango chutney the most, but any favourite Indian dip or sauce works well. Or what about some leftover curry sauce?
Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this onion bhaji in air fryer recipe it has just been our Philips Air Fryer. We have this one and its wonderful for many types of air fryer recipes.
Plus, we recommend you head over to our air fryer recipes category as we have more than 500 tried and tested air fryer recipes and have been air frying for 10 years.
How To Cook Frozen Onion Bhajis?
- Load. Remove your frozen onion bhajis from its packaging and add it to the air fryer basket.
- Spray. Next spray the frozen onion bhajis with extra virgin olive oil. This will help stop them looking anaemic and give them a crisp. Alternatively swap this for egg wash.
- Cook. Air fry your onion bhajis from frozen for 6 minutes until golden and piping hot in the centre.
And I am sure you can see now how easy it is to air fry onion bhajis and why it has become one of my favourite frozen foods.
How Long To Cook Onion Bhajis?
The onion bhaji air fryer cooking time is JUST 6 minutes. This is because they are rather small compared to the fresh ones you get at an Indian restaurant.
If you are cooking onion bhajis from frozen that are much bigger, then I recommend increasing the cook time to 8 minutes.
How Do You Reheat Onion Bhajis In Air Fryer?
Do you want to reheat a frozen onion bhaji that you saved from the takeaway? Or maybe you have some thawed sat in the fridge that you got last night from a takeaway?
Well you be pleased to know that its really easy to reheat onion bhajis in the air fryer.
Exactly the same cooking method, just a much shorter cook time.
Instead of 6 minutes do 2 minutes, or for frozen ones that you are reheating do 4 minutes.
