Air Fryer Oatmeal Cookies

As I write this, we are packing up our house and making our move back from Portugal to England. Last time we lived in England was 13 years ago and it has been 3 years since we last visited family in England.

I am on this mission to empty my pantry and freezers, as I am a food hoarder and living in the country like a backup plan for when I can not go grocery shopping.

Whilst clearing everything out I found two amazing things in my kitchen. A homemade cookbook that my aunts and mum put together for me, ten years ago. After my aunt had made me these amazing oatmeal cookies and I had asked for the recipe.

I also found a container of my favourite gluten free rolled oats (I only ever buy this brand) and said to the kids, that today we are going to make air fryer oatmeal cookies and update our old recipe.

They were in the kitchen in a flash with their baking utensils and then afterwards, asked what other pantry staples we needed to use up.

Can I Bake Cookies In My Air Fryer?

Yes, you can! Cookies in the air fryer are fantastic and so easy too. Plus, the air fryer cooks faster than the oven = getting your cookies sooner!

Plus, if you have a habit of forgetting about them when they are in the oven, the air fryer beeps and stops when done.

Add to this that the air fryer can keep them warm for an hour in case you want to save some warm ones for later.

Cookies In Air Fryer Without Parchment Paper

Nowadays, there is many brands selling parchment paper that fits the size of your air fryer. I have tried it and not liked cooking with it. But there is limited parchment paper where I live, so maybe I just need to find the right brand.

Anyway, this has resulted with me either putting cookies directly in the air fryer basket (which creates a LOT of mess) or coming up with a plan B.

My quick plan B is to use foil instead of parchment paper. You can place it into the air fryer basket and then sit your cookies on it. Then remove the foil and cookies from the air fryer together once cooked, and the foil then becomes your cooling tray. You can also eat your cookies from the foil to save on washing up.

Here are my oatmeal cookies using some foil:

The slow plan B is to buy a reusable silicone baking sheet, and have it cut to size for the air fryer you are using. This is fantastic because it wipes clean and is better for the environment compared to using new foil each time you make air fryer cookies.

Air Fryer Oatmeal Cookie Recipes

Our air fryer oat cookies recipe is a simple one, that is ideal for mixing and matching to make your own variations.

For example, you could make air fryer oatmeal chocolate chip cookies by adding in 28g/1oz of chocolate chips. Or transform your cookies into air fryer raisin oatmeal cookies by swapping the chocolate chips for raisins.

I would gladly do the raisins thing, but as we are moving, I don’t have any raisins in.

But just think of your favourite cookies ingredient and add it in!

Oats – The most memorable ingredient in oatmeal cookies is the rolled oats. They give that amazing crunch to your cookies and have you going back for seconds. Any rolled oats are fine, but I prefer this brand.

Butter – Any butter will do and get it out of the fridge an hour before baking, that way it will be easier for you to rub your butter into your flour.

Flour. I recommend that you use self raising flour as it will make your oatmeal cookies puffed up and they wont feel flat.

Sugar. For the sweetener you can use whatever you prefer. Though I use caster sugar because it provides the best results in baking. I also like to add golden syrup and vanilla essence for extra flavour.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this air fryer cookies recipe, it has just been our Philips Air Fryer. We have this one and its wonderful for air fryer baking, as well as for other air fryer classics.

How To Bake Air Fryer Oatmeal Cookies?

  • Prep. Load into a mixing bowl flour, sugar, and butter. Chop the butter into small bite sized chunks as it will be easier to prep your cookies. Then using your fingertips rub the fat into the flour and sugar until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
  • Oats. Then add in the rolled oats and your other ingredients and mix well. You can also add in chocolate chips now, or raisins now, if you are including them in your oatmeal cookies.
  • Milk. Next add a little mix at a time and mix with your hands until you have cookie dough. Note that because of the golden syrup and the vanilla essence, you only need a tiny bit of milk to make a dough.
  • Air Fry. Load the oatmeal cookies into the air fryer, and air fry for approximately 11 minutes. Allow to cool before serving.

Are Oatmeal Cookies Unhealthy?

Oatmeal cookies are healthier than traditional chocolate chip cookies but I still wouldn’t consider them to be healthy. That is because they still feature butter, sugar and flour.

However, because you are using gluten free healthy rolled oats in this recipe, you are reducing the quantity of flour, making it slightly healthier than classic cookies.

Why Are My Oatmeal Cookies Dry?

There are two reasons for dry oatmeal cookies. Either you have cooked your cookies for too long, or there is not enough liquid in the dough.

This can be solved next time by slightly reducing the cook time and adding in extra vanilla essence and a little extra milk to your next batch.

Air Fryer Oatmeal Crème Pies

You can also transform your air fryer oatmeal cookies into oatmeal crème pies, and I have a quick 1 ingredient hack for this.

Air Fryer Oatmeal Crème Pies

Instead of using a traditional buttercream filling you can use squirty cream. We made these oatmeal cookies the same day as our air fryer scones and had cream leftover. What I did was cook some smaller oatmeal cookies and then sandwiched two small ones between a layer of cream.

They were delicious and in typical 4 year old style my son ate the cream and brought back the cookie for more cream!
