Air Fryer Scones

Well, you can’t take Yorkshire out of the girl.

I grew up in a small seaside town in Yorkshire, northern England. The town was (and still is) loaded with lots of similar places to eat out. Local fish and chip shops, local carvery restaurants and of course plenty of tearooms that sell scones and tea for brunch or afternoon tea.

My grandad would take me to his favourite tearooms, and it was wonderful to enjoy a scone together and enjoy each other’s company. It was on a cobbled street that was often used for filming vintage TV shows and even though it was great value for money and never expensive, it always felt like an expensive treat.

Sadly, my grandad died several years ago, but my grandma’s favourite scone recipe does live on and when I bought my first air fryer many years ago, I was soon baking my grandma’s scone recipe in the air fryer.

Today we are going to be showing you scones in air fryer, how long to cook scones in air fryer, the best scone mix recipe, what temperature to cook scones in air fryer and so much more.

Beyond our scones in air fryer, we have many more baking ideas for you to try including: air fryer rock cakes, air fryer cake, air fryer fat rascal, air fryer tea loaf and lets not forget about air fryer Victoria sandwich

Can You Cook Scones In An Air Fryer?

Yes, you can! Scones are fantastic in the air fryer. They are easy to make and are so easy you can make them with your kids.

Scones was also the first thing I ever baked at school, and you can see why. As air fryer scones start off with 3 simple ingredients of self raising flour, butter, and milk.

It is also a fantastic basic baking recipe that you can adapt and make into different recipes. For example, you can roll out scone dough and you have a pizza base, or make a savoury version and use it as an alternative to dumplings for your stew.

How To Make Scones That Rise?

The secret to the perfect recipe for scones in air fryer is to use self raising flour. This scones self raising flour recipe is brilliant because it uses less ingredients, and because of the raising agent the scones rise perfectly, as you can see if you scroll through our scones step by step photos.

Can I Make Scones With Plain Flour?

No, its not recommended to make scones with plain flour or with all purpose flour. Instead, you need to make scones with self raising flour, or in the USA what they call self rising flour. This is because you need your scones to rise, and instead they will be like pancakes.

Scone Dough

What I love about our scone dough is that it’s the perfect basic scone recipe that become your go to for so many different air fryer scone recipes.

For example, you can just make a simple change and you have air fryer cheese scones, or air fryer fruit scones, or even cranberry scones or air fryer cinnamon scones for Christmas.

When experimenting with scones in the air fryer, I recommend you try out a few different flavour combinations. Then when you do add 28g or 1oz of your favourite extra ingredient for the best air fryer scone recipe for the season.

For example, your scones made in the air fryer could be:

  • Air Fryer Blueberry Scones
  • Air Fryer Cranberry Scones
  • Air Fryer Pumpkin Scones
  • Air Fryer Strawberry Scones
  • Air Fryer Fruit Scones
  • Air Fryer Cheese Scones

Then just use our basic air fryer scone recipe for your base, then add in 28g of your extras.

After you have rubbed your fat into your flour and before adding the milk, mix in your extras. Such as 28g grated cheddar cheese for cheese scones, or 28g of raisins for fruit scones.

Scones Air Fryer Ingredients

Flour – For the best results use a quality self raising flour. Try not to go too cheap as it will show in your scones.

Butter – Any butter will do and get it out of the fridge an hour before baking, that way it will be easier for you to rub your butter into your flour.

Milk. When baking scones, it is the milk that helps combine the dough and make that creamy delicious scone texture. You can also use buttermilk too if you prefer. Do avoid low fat milk though as it will not produce quality scones.

Egg Wash. To get that golden glow on your scones you will need to add egg wash to your scones. Though ours are overly golden because we let our little ones loose with the egg wash and they don’t have a limit.

Extras. You can also add in extras such as dried fruit, cheese, or just keep it simple with some caster sugar.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this air fryer scone recipe, it has just been our Philips Air Fryer. We have this one and its wonderful for air fryer baking, as well as for other air fryer classics.

What To Serve With Air Fryer Scones?

I love to serve my scones with strawberries, strawberry jam and cream. I am a strawberry addict, and nothing beats strawberries being cooked this way.

What I love to do (which also saves on washing up) is to load my strawberries, cooked scones and strawberry jam into the strawberry box and serve them in the sunshine with a couple of plates and a bottle of squirty cream.

Traditional. Note that this is a traditional British scones recipe from the 1960’s and you are welcome to modernise them if you prefer.

Using my Tower airfryer and exact recipe quantity timing was way out. Second batch I baked on 160° for 9 minutes, turned over and a further 5 minutes.
    Pretty good

It never even occurred to me that I couldn’t make scones in my air fryer. I used my normal potato and cheese recipe and, since my Instant Pot Vortex is square, made 4 big ones instead of 6. But I never use self raising flour. No Kiwi woman of my generation would, and even my English husband doesn’t like the aftertaste. I make my own baking powder with 1/3 baking soda and 2/3 cream of tartar. I had to learn to make Yorkshire pudding in a real hurry when I got married, and also pease pudding. I never tasted either until I went to dine with my parents in law. Fortunately for Roger, I like both. My scones turned out great in the air fryer even though I forgot to put baking paper under them. A couple of times I used my potato and cheese scone recipe to make bread, just using yeast instead of baking powder and was delighted with the result. Thanks for your recipe. It looks like a good one.

  9. Thank you for sharing your food with those who need it, instead of dumping it. You and your family come off as such genuine people. I haven’t bought a recipe book, but keep up with your email updates. The rate of exchange between Pounds and Rands is just horrific. I do like your recipes.
