Turnip Fries

Yesterday we shared with how an update of our instant pot turnips. It’s a great recipe showing you how we steam our turnip and then serve it with some butter. Its truly a great side dish and one we recommend trying.

But what we also did at the same time, when we were developing the instant pot recipe was to make some turnip fries.

Turnip fries are delicious and many, many root veggies are perfect for transforming into fries. Plus, if you follow a diet like paleo or the whole30 and are looking for fries without real potatoes then they are ideal.

Though naughty mum moment here – I love to serve the kids turnip fries and not tell them, and they just assume they have proper air fryer homemade chips in front of them lol.

Today I will be sharing with all about turnip fries including how to cut a turnip, air fryer turnips, how to cook turnips in air fryer and so much more.

If you are looking for more delicious air fryer veggie fries do try: air fryer rutabaga fries, air fryer parsnip fries, air fryer butternut squash fries, or my favourite air fryer carrot fries.

Can You Air Fry Turnips?

Yes, you can air fry turnips and you will love them. Think of turnips as an alternative to your potatoes and then air fry them in a similar way. Such as air fryer sliced potatoes, air fryer potato peelings, air fryer roast potatoes and let’s not forget about making delicious homemade chips with turnips like we are doing today.

What Does A Turnip Taste Like?

Many describe that a turnip tastes like a sweeter version of cabbage. Our opinion is that a turnip tastes like a dulled down version of a rutabaga/swede. You see a rutabaga has a certain taste to it, that as soon as it is used in cooking, you just know its been added. Yet the turnip is like a less strong version. Read more about it in turnip vs swede.

Do You Peel Turnips?

Yes, you do peel turnips and its so easy. Its no more difficult than when you peel a potato to make chips or for roast potatoes.

Turnip fries cooked in the air fryer taste delicious and it’s the lack of skin that make them so good.

How To Cut A Turnip?

Cutting a turnip is so easy and much easier than cutting a rutabaga. This is because they are much smaller.

Simply cut the top and the bottom off the turnip and then peel it like you would peel a potato. Then you have turnip ready to be chopped into chips or fries.

Though when chopping turnip for turnip fries the turnips can be quite small so I often cut side ways for a better medium slice then lengthways when there is not much length to it.

Are Turnips Low In Carbs?

Turnips are much lower in carb compared to regular potatoes but as a root vegetable are not good for the likes of keto.

There are 6g of carbs per 100g of turnip which if you are doing a kilo of turnips in air fryer that is 60g.

But this is still 75% less carbs than the humble spud.

Why Do My Air Fryer Fries Get Soggy?

The biggest reason for your air fryer fries getting soggy is par boiling or soaking the potatoes first.

When you make air fryer fries, you don’t need to soak or par boil and when you do they end up too wet and even with a pat dry are often too wet and this stops the oil from sticking to them and makes them soggy instead of crispy.

Turnips – We used 4 medium turnips in this air fried turnips recipe. You can do more or you can do less and we find 1 medium turnip per person is a good serving size.

Oil – Please don’t use avocado oil its not very good for the air fryer and stops your air fryer turnips from getting crispy. Instead opt for extra virgin olive oil or for extra crispy and if you are feeling like you need pure comfort food swap this for coconut oil or duck fat.

Seasoning – Then for seasoning your air fried turnip its totally personal choice as you easily mix and match flavours. We love salt and pepper as a starting point. Then you can add mixed herbs, parsley, cajun or any other favourite.

Can You Recommend An Air Fryer?

I often get asked which air fryers I recommend and which one I use. In 95% of our air fryer recipes, we use either the Philips Air Fryer XL or the Cosori XL because they are the best ones, we have found out of many air fryers we have tried over the years. You can click on the links above and read up on them. But if you would rather have a dual air fryer we recommend this Ninja Dual (make sure you order the right one as not all are good) or the Philips Dual.

Notes

Seasonings. I find that you need some seasoning beyond salt and pepper, because the seasoning helps make the turnip crispy. But this can be anything including cooked turnips with cajun, fajita, mixed herbs, parsley, oregano or any other seasoning you can think of.
