As I write this, we are three weeks away, from leaving Portugal and returning to England, after 13 years living here.

One thing I always complain about is the lack of favourite foods that you either can’t get in Portugal or carry a high premium.

One of those is corn tortillas.

I can get them, but I have to go into a high priced English supermarket that is a 45 minute round trip to achieve that and most of the time I will settle for flour tortillas instead.

One of my readers mentioned that every air fryer tortilla chips recipe that they see online is about corn tortillas and they would love to make air fryer tortilla chips from flour tortillas.

I noticed I had some old corn tortillas in the freezer and some flour tortillas in the pantry and decided to update our old post and see how they compared with both.

Can You Make Tortilla Chips In An Air Fryer?

Yes, you can. The air fryer is fantastic for tortilla chips, and you will be amazed by how good they are.

You will think that you are in a restaurant having Mexican chips with how good they are. And you will also be amazed by how little oil you need to make your own tortilla chips in the air fryer.

Can You Make Tortilla Chips From Flour Tortillas?

Yes, you can.

In fact, after making a batch of air fryer corn tortilla chips and a batch of air fryer flour tortilla chips, I preferred the ones made with the flour tortillas.

How Are Tortilla Chips Made?

Before we get into the technique of making tortilla chips in the air fryer, I am sure you want to know how tortilla chips are made, so that you can master the method.

Well, tortilla chips are toasting your tortilla wraps until they are golden like tortilla chips. A similar concept to when you transform bread to toast.

Quite often though, this method involves a lot of oil and through the air fryer we can drastically reduce the oil.

In fact, when you make homemade tortilla chips in the air fryer you only need a brush of extra virgin olive oil or butter for the same result.

Making Tortilla Chips In Air Fryer

Before we dig into the ingredients and the method behind making tortilla chips in the air fryer, I wanted to fill you in on some top tips and more about the process.

Seasonings – Do you want spicy tortilla chips? Or do you want chicken flavoured tortilla chips? The choice is totally yours! When you season your tortillas, use any dry seasoning that you want.

Mix – I recommend you load oil into a ramekin and then mix with seasonings before coating on your tortilla wraps. This will ensure your seasoning sticks to the wraps and that you have an even coating.

Dieting – If you follow Slimming World for example, you will love how low on the syns these tortilla chips can be. Simply use Weight Watchers wraps and then spray with extra virgin olive oil (don’t worry you don’t need much) and then air fry.

Quantities – Don’t overfill your air fryer basket. Those at the bottom will cook the fastest and halfway through you want to shake them about for an even air fry.

Store – Load into an airtight container if not consuming straight away. Then you can save some of your homemade tortilla chips for later.

Scissors – Rather than using a knife to chop the tortilla wraps, I find it is so much easier to use a pair of scissors instead.

Tortillas – Any fresh tortillas will do the trick. You can make your own DIY tortilla chips from either corn wraps or flour wraps.

Oil – Its essential to have some extra virgin olive oil or something similar like avocado oil on your wraps. You then brush the wraps with oil prior to air frying.

Seasoning – You can mix and match seasonings depending on what you are eating with your chips. I prefer to use cajun seasoning because it produces a slightly spicy tortilla chip. Though its all about personal choice.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this tortilla chips air fryer recipe, it has just been our Philips Air Fryer. We have this one and its wonderful for air fryer snacks, as well as for other air fryer classics.

  • Chop – Using some scissors slice your tortilla in half, then half again and then half again, until you have perfect 8ths.
  • Air Fry. Load the tortilla triangles into the air fryer and cook until you have perfectly golden and crispy tortilla chips. Which takes approximately 10 minutes.

What To Serve With Your DIY Tortilla Chips?

After you make your own tortilla chips, I am sure you are after serving suggestions.

My first thought is to use them to make our air fryer nachos. Or alternatively you can serve them with our air fryer sweet potato wedges on a sharing platter.

Though my kids love them as something to snack on when watching a movie or for something for a road trip.
